Matchday thread - Toon v Burnley

Post by UlversToon » Sat May 04, 2024 6:10 am

Saturday sees the Magpies on the road again, facing Vincent Kompany's Clarets at Turf Moor in an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off.

The rear sections of the away stand at Turf Moor are now configured as safe standing areas, in use as such for the first time at our game on Saturday.

Those in sections 16-20 will receive a wristband once through the turnstiles: a process which is expected to slow down entry for all travelling fans.

NB: random ticket ID checks continue to be carried out by NUFC at all away games, adding to the possibility of delays. Our advice: get there earlier.

Eddie Howe returns to his former club as he takes charge of his 100th Premier League game for Newcastle, looking for his 49th victory.

His other PL games have seen 25 draws and 26 defeats, making him United's second most successful manager in the reformed top tier behind Kevin Keegan (first spell).

Team: Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Fabian Schar was set to miss the remainder of the season with the hamstring issue that forced him off at half time against Sheffield United last Saturday.

Miggy Almiron is back with the senior squad after injury and was seen training on Wednesday.

There's increasing optimism that Joelinton is closing in on a return after being out since the FA Cup victory at the mackems in early January.

Kieran Trippier meanwhile is training in Dubai as he looks to get back on the field for the closing three games of the season - presumably the minimum requirement to convince England boss Gareth Southgate that he's available for Euro 2024 selection.

Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, Matt Targett, Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't play again this season. Nick Pope's availability is unclear.

Assuming he keeps his place, Martin Dubravka will make his 150th Premier League appearance for Newcastle. Dan Burn meanwhile is one game away from completing a century of Magpie outings in all competitions.

Tonali rates this match as follows:

NUFC win 20/21
The draw 13/5
BFC win 23/10

BFC: Aaron Ramsey, Jordan Beyer, Nathan Redmond and Ameen Al-Dakhil remain sidelined. There could be a recall for Luca Koleosho.

Burnley are undefeated in three games and have been beaten just once in their last eight outings. At home they've won one and drawn the other two of their most recent matches.

UK TV: None

UK Radio: Live on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport

Referee: Anthony Taylor - a fourth Newcastle game of the season for the official from the Manchester area - none of which have been on Tyneside.

Starting off with the 2-2 draw at Wolves, he returned for our 2-4 loss at Liverpool and 3-2 victory away at Nottingham Forest.

VAR: John Brooks

Stats:

Presumably Krafth at CB seen as Botman, Lascelles and now Schar are crocked!

I've brought him into my Draft FPL team purely because of a lack of options and the fact he's guaranteed to play the next 4 games (unless he gets an injury).

I wonder if we might go to an extremely wacky back 5 with Trippier inside too next week?

If we turn up we win - but our away form has been abysmal this season and Schar is going to be a big miss... I'm not feeling too confident. But on the other hand, Burnley are s**** so who knows?

I do fancy us today for some reason. Bit of hunger, Isak on form, Wilson/Barnes etc challenging for places. Just get at them.

Perplexed by our seeming lack of hunger and intensity in games such as these.
The more hungry team is always the bottom feeder. Hate our lack of anger and pressing intensity so often this season, injuries no excuse
