Matchday thread - Toon v Man U
Yet another big game in a season full of big games!
Wednesday sees the Magpies make their second visit of the season to Old Trafford, having already won 3-0 there in the Carabao Cup.
It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.
Following a 1-0 win at SJP in the first Premier League meeting, Eddie Howe's side have the chance to wrap up their first PL double against the Red Devils. The last time Newcastle defeated them home and away in the league was back in the 1930/31 season.
Were the black and whites to avoid defeat, that would confirm a finishing place above the hosts for the first time ever in the Premier League. That was last achieved in 1976/77 (5th and 6th places).
Since Edison Cavani's 71st minute leveller at SJP back in December 2021, Manchester United have failed to net in the PL against us in 289 minutes of play.
This will be the tenth time that the two clubs have met three times in the same season; Newcastle have never kept a 100% record intact in the previous nine.
Team: Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, Matt Targett, Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't play again this season.
It's expected that Alexander Isak will retain his place in the starting line-up, but unclear as yet whether Callum Wilson will return to the squad - Tuesday's press conference saw Howe mention that Brentford could be a more realistic target for Wilson.
There's a chance that Fabian Schar could be involved while Kieran Trippier may return to the first XI after his brief substitute outing against Brighton.
Eddie Howe has a decision to make whether to field Martin Dubravka against his former club or recall fit-again Nick Pope for the first time since he faced the Red Devils at Gallowgate back in December.
Tonali rates this match as follows:
NUFC win 6/4
The draw 3/1
MUFC win 7/5
MUFC: Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial and Tyrell Malacia remain unavailable.
Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford may face the Magpies but Erik ten Hag appeared to rule out a return for Bruno Fernandes when speaking after Sunday's 0-1 home loss to Arsenal.
On home ground this season the Red Devils have won nine times in the PL, drawn three and lost six.
UK TV: Live on Sky Sports
UK Radio: Live on talkSPORT
Referee: Robert Jones - the Merseysider completes a full set of appointments in this fixture, having overseen the Carabao Cup meeting here and PL fixture at SJP.
Jones also refereed our early season 0-1 loss at Manchester City and was most recently seen in the middle for our epic 4-3 victory over West Ham.

We'll lose. Stuck £25 on it. Something to ease the pain. Would be more than happy to lose it though and I would take a drab nil nil before kick off.
Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Man U
Create loads of chances, don't score them and Man U will get a jammy goal

I'm going to watch the match upstairs with a selection of beers, probably in a darkened room while my wife has the living room all to herself to watch her Korean drama The Glory.

This is actually the most nervous I've been before a match all season. If we get a point, it will cement a minimum of 7th place and also mean it will be the first time since 1977 that we will finish above them.
I honestly think we're going to f*** things up though. We'll lose tonight and draw/lose against Brighton and finish 8th.

Not too surprised about joelinton, the club have been ripped for starting players too soon after injury and he’s hardly had many mins, now fans will have a go that we’re being carefuloriginallad wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2024 6:04 pmNo Wilson and Big Joe on the bench![]()

Some god awful passes in the final third already, Anderson and Longstaff can't be amongst our first 11 next season. Composure is horrendous.
