Why not? Team looked so much better and some of the players playing recently havenโt performed.FOGGONTHETYNE wrote: โWed Oct 30, 2024 9:48 pmAgainst arsenal?... I had exactly the same thought the other day actually, and fully agree. I think we do need to look at what's best for the team as a whole,r ather than just play the "best" players. Obviously other aspects in terms of man management come into play. But even rotating Bruno/Tonali has to be seen as an option, when the "best three" midfield just hasn't been clicking at all this season.TJR wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 9:11 amMidfield is much more balanced with Longstaff and Willock in.
Trying to shoehorn Bruno and Tonali into the same team reminds me of the Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes debacle. They both want to play the same role and do the same thing and neither can offer what Longstaff and Willock bring to the team. They're by far both better footballers than Longstaff and Willock but collectively as a midfield we're better off only playing one of them and the results back that up.
Also the link up of Joelinton LW and Willock left of the midfield 3 was a massive factor in finishing 4th the other year. They have a great understanding and chemistry together, they're able to interchange positions seamlessly causing defenders headaches and they're great at pressing together. It's worth pushing Gordon out to the right to have the Joelinton / Willock combination on the left. And it solves the problem at RW becuase Gordon is more than capable there.
If you were picking a front 6, these wouldn't be the best 6 individuals but as a collective team it's by far the most effective combination and hopefully one that we'll see a lot of.
Longstaff - Bruno (or Tonali) - Willock
Gordon - Isak - Joelinton
This. Well said.TJR wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 9:11 amMidfield is much more balanced with Longstaff and Willock in.

He's unfashionable, and obviously he's not at the standard of a Bruno or a Joelinton, but just like Krafth for the most part he does what he does well. Last night he added balance to the midfield, winning the ball well which helped us control the middle of the park which we haven't done well in ages, and was able to go properly box to box throughout. He's a body in the right place so often which we lack when it's Bruno and Tonali.FOGGONTHETYNE wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 1:07 pmquite surprised at all this love towards longstaff, obviously i''m just an armchair fan these days but do know aa lot of st holders who tell me no-one gets more stick from the fans during the match than staffy
never been my cup of tea like, misplaced passes, losing possession, wayward shots into row z.....apart from that he's ok.Colly wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 1:21 pmHe's unfashionable, and obviously he's not at the standard of a Bruno or a Joelinton, but just like Krafth for the most part he does what he does well. Obviously he's an easy target for our dimmer fans, not everyone is a superstar and he isn't perfect, but he's a perfectly decent player.
I'll forgive his wayward finishing as he at least comes onto the ball in dangerous positions often enough a few still go in. But it's abysmal passing that really holds him back in my books. I'll admit he breaks up play in our half okay, and doesn't make stupid passes near our box, but it's how cheaply he gives the ball away in the opposition's half that play seems to break down a lot more when he's on the field.FOGGONTHETYNE wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 1:25 pmnever been my cup of tea like, misplaced passes, losing possession, wayward shots into row z.....apart from that he's ok.Colly wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 1:21 pm

babyface hall has a decent shot on him like, unfortunately they're always blocked but one day he'll hit top binsColly wrote: โThu Oct 31, 2024 1:58 pmDo we have anyone in the squad (Schar and maybe Trippier aside) who can shoot from any kind of distance? Gordon and Barnes both have that cut in edge of the box curler, but not a single one of our centre mids can hit a long ranger. Tonali hit a decent-ish one yesterday but it wasn't on the highlights so not sure how close it was, but it certainly had a lot more power than a Bruno floater.
