TFI – Player Ratings vs Stoke City – 29 Sep 14

A routine victory for Stoke against a listless Newcastle. A simple goal put Stoke ahead early and they coasted from that point onwards. Janmaat did not put enough pressure on Moses who cut inside and played a dinked cross. Our captain was out of place and was out jumped by Crouch. The type of goal one would train (presumably) to prevent Stoke scoring. Newcastle simply did not test the Stoke goal enough after that, indeed Stoke came closest hitting the bar after halftime.

We ask our forum members to rate each player’s performance in the concerned game out of 10, which we then average out to get a rating representative of the fans’ views, we also collect a few user comments to summarise how the player did and show a few different viewpoints from the board. The top scoring player is man of the match; the lowest is mug of the match. Ratings are from this thread http://www.toonforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6904" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Highlights, if you can call them that, at time of writing can be found here - http://www.reddit.com/r/footballhighlig ... er_league/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Man of the match award goes to Tiote, fighting hard against the physical presence of Stoke clearly suits him. The only other outfield player to achieve more than 5 came in the surprising form of Obertan. His pace, power and running made the side more dynamic.

Mug of the match narrowly goes to Gouffran over Cabella. In addition to the standard lack of redeeming play, Gouffran almost gave a cheap penalty away. I'm running out of new ways to regurgitate the index's low rating of his play and this is only September. Cabella also drew ire, trying to overplay was a common complaint, he created very little. Colback's passing was very off, drawing low scores from his usual champions. The defence was uniformly poor, struggling in the air.

Overall, a poor 4.44 for a poor performance. For letting Stoke win at a canter, Pardew's score was again very low 1.82. Tactics that had not succeeded in the season so far again came up short. To quote one user's quote:
'Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results'.

Krul - 5.74 Ratings ranged between 5 and 7
"5 - Not much to do in general, the odd decent save, could do nothing about the goal."
"6 - Couldn't do anything with the goal. Coped with a load of back passes and squared up to that f***ing lanky prick."
"6 - Couldn't do anything about the header and stopped a certain goal. Didn't like his "afters" with a Stoke player though. If Colo isn't up to organising the defence perhaps Tim should take a bigger role."

Janmaat - 4.29 Ratings ranged between 3 and 6
"4.5 - Rash challenges and getting caught out of position giving the ball away."
"5 - Lost the ball a few times, but decent going forward. Not that quick though v Moses."
"4 - Ok going forward, shaky defending and weak. Should have done better with stopping the cross for the goal. Debuchy was better."

Williamson - 4.41 Ratings ranged between 3 and 6
"4.5 - Not abysmal, which is about as good as Willo gets. No idea why we keep hoofing set pieces at him. Did his 'get ball, kick ball' routine decently well."
"5 - Some decent challenges/interceptions."
"4. He can't pass. Not really his fault that the ball kept getting passed to him, but all he does is lump it every single time, and Crouch just bullied him all night long."

Coloccini - 4.09 Ratings ranged between 2 and 5
"3 - Didn't lead, didn't defend, too slow. Of course he wasn't going to beat Crouch in the air but it looked like he had no idea what the offside trap was."
"2 - At fault for the goal. Firstly he played Crouch onside when he shouldn't have and secondly he didn't win the header. Didn't look up to it."
"5 - Not much to do, he was getting pelted for the goal but it was a foul and Janmaat should have stopped the cross."

Dummett - 4.88 Ratings ranged between 3 and 6.5
"6 - Thought he was our best defender. He busted a lung for the cause, and actually tried to push us forward when he had the ball."
"5.5 - Probably our best defender on the night which isn't saying much. Did the bare minimum but his pressure stopped a couple of Stoke attacks."
"4 - Standard Championship performance. Cannot cross a ball."

Colback - 3.85 Ratings ranged between 2 and 5.5
"5.5 - Not one of his best performances, some sloppy passing but gave us an option further forward, tried to link to the striker."
"4 - I missed the first couple of games of the season where he was apparently good. He's looked s***e since Southampton. Like replacing Cabaye's Mercedes S-Class with an N-reg Vauxhall Vectra"
"2 - Couldn't pass for his life and missed a sitter. Shocking all round."

Tioté - 5.94 Ratings ranged between 5 and 7
"5 - Feel harsh as he was basically asked to be our Cabaye tonight and clearly doesn't possess the skills to do that, should've been partnered with Anita"
"7 - Our best player by a mile."
"6.5 - Looked like he was playing against Stoke single-handedly at times. Decent performance considering."

Sissoko - 4.85 Ratings ranged between 2 and 6
"4 - Blind alleys, silly fouls."
"4 - Can go from being great to absolute dogs*** in the space of a few seconds. Inconsistent and ultimately did nothing. "
"5 - Ran a lot, then ran out of ideas."

Cabella - 2.74 Ratings ranged between 1 and 5
"2 - All he does is stepovers then falls on the floor."
"3 - Anonymous."
"3 - Bloke is a joke, overcomplicates absolutely everything and is as about as strong as an asthmatic blowing through a straw. He should be dropped."

Gouffran - 2.62 Ratings ranged between 1 and 4
"4 - How does he still get a game? 24 games without a goal and even Altidore scored against this lot."
"2.5 - Did not only f*** all, but basically kicked a player down in the penalty box and otherwise didn't influence the game in the slightest. Infuriating and you know he'll start next time if Pards is still here."
"3.5 - Should've had a penalty against and did nothing going forward."

Rivière - 3.82 Ratings ranged between 2 and 5.5
"5.5 - Average marks cos what can he do with no service?"
"5 - Lacked service, looked decent the 3 times he touched the ball."
"3.5 - So so isolated, but still has such a limp shot and is crap in the air for someone who's so tall."

Cissé - 4.41 Ratings ranged between 3 and 6
"4 - What could he do? He was even more isolated than Rivière and is a player who we ALREADY KNOW needs support in order to score. But f*** changing the formation, that's complicated!"
"5 - Tried hard but had no service whatsoever."
"4 - Hardly touched the ball, found some good space once or twice but our midfield is incapable of finding him."

Obertan - 5.76 Ratings ranged between 3 and 7
"7. We only looked like scoring when he was on the pitch. Some good runs, and he made some important challenges as well. Can't be helped that nobody read his balls into the box, and when they did somehow spooned it onto the bar."
"6.5 - Made a difference looked bright when he came on. Would have him in over Cabella and Gouffran right now."
"6 - An improvement on what we'd seen from the others before him, created one good chance."

Ameobi - 4.76 Ratings ranged between 3 and 6.5
"5.5 - Better than Sissoko, Cabella and Gouffran put together."
"4 - Meh. Wants to be Raheem Sterling but is the Aldi own brand version. Not up to scratch."
"6 - A threat but end product lacking, capable of stuff others could only dream of but then follows it up with a stumble or a poor touch."

Pardew - 1.82 Ratings ranged between 1 and 4
"3 - Stoke never needed to get out of 2nd gear for a comfortable win. Our defending is shocking and our frontman isolated, will he change it? Will he f***."

"1 - Shambolic defending from a manager who prides himself on that part of his coaching, constantly caught on the counter attack, gaps the size of a small village between defence, midfield and attack, devoid of imagination, guile, creativity, invention, ideas, pace and strength in the final third. I've never seen a Newcastle side perform as poorly as we have in the last 9 months."

"2 - 'Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results'. Sack him. Please."

"2 - Absolutely dire. Putting out the same team that struggled against Hull. Dropping Haidara. Not bothering to change the formation, just swapping one isolated poacher for another. Pards all over. Get him out and send him to League 1 where he belongs."

"1. He'll continue to receive 1's off me until he goes. By the way, I was there, and him 'applauding' the fans wasn't him respecting the fans' opinion, at least not in my eyes. All the way up the touchline he was getting 'You're getting sacked in the morning' belted at him, and he sort of did a little aggressive clap that did nothing but infuriate everyone in the away end because it just looked like he was taking the piss out of us. Which he was."
