Newcastle United are pleased to confirm the appointment of Simon Smith as the Club's new goalkeeping coach.
Fifty-two-year-old Smith replaces Andy Woodman, who left the Magpies last week.
Smith leaves his post with the Football Association to take up a role he previously held with United, as first team goalkeeping coach, from 1999-2004.
The Club would like to thank the FA for their co-operation and goodwill in facilitating this appointment.
Newton Aycliffe-born Smith began his professional career with Newcastle United in 1978, spending four years at St. James' Park before moving on to Whitley Bay and Gateshead, where he played 501 games - including a run of 405 matches in a row - over a ten-year period.
He started his coaching career with Newcastle United in 1993, where he initially worked with the Club's young goalkeepers before becoming the Magpies' first team goalkeeping coach in 1999 under the management of Ruud Gullit and then Sir Bobby Robson.
In 2006, Smith moved to Vancouver to undertake a year-long secondment to research the biomechanics of goalkeeping and during this time he worked as a consultant to the Canadian Soccer Association.
More recently he was employed by the Football Association as the goalkeeping coach for England's youth development teams.

Simon Smith returns as goalkeeping coach
Re: Andy Woodman on his way out?
Sounds canny.
Re: Andy Woodman on his way out?
Worked under Sir Bobby you say?
Re: Andy Woodman on his way out?
It doesn't really matter. Mourinho had a very brief playing career in lower league sides, and look at him now.Holystone... wrote:This bloke has been very lucky to hang on to Pards shirt tales since he played with him at Palace. For a keeper who plied his trade in the lower leagues I'm struggling to think what qualifies him at the very highest level.
Smith coached under Sir Bobby and looked after Shay Given, who turned out to be a pretty bloody good goalkeeper.
Andy Woodman also spent most of his career in lower league sides, so we're not exactly downgrading in terms of playing experience.
What matters most is overall coaching experience, knowledge and success. With Smith's stints at Newcastle, the FA, the MLS, the CSA and the Women's national team, and his study of the biomechanics of goalkeeping, he clearly knows his stuff and cares a lot about the finer details.

Re: Andy Woodman on his way out?
This. Coaches quite often aren't and weren't better than the players they are coaching. Look at the top 4 in the Premier League last season. Mourinho as you have mentioned, Van Gaal, Pellegrini and Wenger would have been absolutely anonymous as footballers. The same goes for the specialist goalkeeping coaches. Their job isn't to be better and pass on their skills, it is to assist the player with their development.Goat wrote:It doesn't really matter. Re: Simon Smith returns as goalkeeping coach
True, but he still has people on his coaching staff who haven't been top tennis players.
The point was they don't have to have been at the top level of the sport to be able to coach in it! f***ing Mifune .

Don't know a lot about the guy but I do know that Steve Harper and Shay Given both improved rapidly when Smith was goalkeeping coach and for me at one time were the best pair of keepers any team had in the Premier League.
