Thauvin Returns To Marseille

Florian Thauvin has returned to Marseille on a season-long loan, with the French club having an obligation to make the move permanent.
The 23-year-old arrived on Tyneside from Marseille 12 months ago, but headed back to the Stade Velodrome in January on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign.

Returning to the North-East this summer, Thauvin featured in four of United's five pre-season friendlies but will now ply his trade for L'OM again in Ligue 1.

The winger made 16 competitive appearances for Newcastle, five of which were starts, and scored one goal.

Everyone at St. James' Park wishes Florian well for the future.
Allegedly, the purchase clause is €11m (£9m).

It was previously announced by OM that he was "set to return".

Disappointing. Think he would have benefited from a year under Rafa in the championship.

He's gone. Updating the OP now.

Presumably this explains the squad number hold up - they were supposed to be announced at 9.30am, according to Mick Lowes last night.

<divadance>

Just need Sissoko to f*** off now and we'll have a likeable squad again.

This has got to be one of the worst signings in our history. To go from Ben Arfa to Cabella to him and then not even playing him is just shocking. Hopefully the last signing of this nature.

No way will they pay £9m for him next year <laugh>

Wonder if we'll see a winger coming in now?
I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?

You're probably right, he exceeds the likes of Luque and Xisco in how bad he was. I guess he wasn't helped by having McClaren as his manager when he first came in though.

I do feel as though he could have maybe offered a little more had he stayed this season. I could've seen Rafa getting the player out of him that had been hidden away.

Misused. Playing a Spanish left sided forward as a left midfielder in a 4-4-2..

Also immediately injured that scuppered his otherwise impressive career.

Harsh on Thauvin to label him one of our worst signings though, barely got a kick under horrendous management.

This. I have to believe our scouting and coaches weren't on the same page with his signing, because he was hardly given a chance considering some of the players we've suffered with, despite the fact we tracked him for years.

I was getting annoyed with Ryder's tweets about him, which really put the blame on him for "quitting" on Newcastle, and other such language. Clearly the club didn't want him from nearly the first month he arrived, and that appears the same through today. So regardless of what his attitude has been, for him to keep suggesting he's forced his way out or has "quit" seems to completely misrepresent the situation and take the onus completely off of the club - who clearly botched the Cabella and Thauvin transfers.

Ludicrous considering this was that first month:

Tongue slightly in cheek, but he needed more of a chance.

As I posted elsewhere on here this type of signing was always a punt . We can't afford to repeat this waste this year . Hence proven Championship players .

If Marlon Harewood can do it in the championship for us, I think this guy can at least get a goal.

He'll score 30 goals for us this season and we'll sell him for £35mil <roll>

Or score 1 and still sell him for £35mil.
