Match day thread -FA Cup Oxford v NUFC
Thanks to nufc.com
This is in no way my own work!!! Cot
FA Cup:
Oxford United (a)
Newcastle's first FA Cup Fourth Round fixture since 2012 sees them visit League One Oxford United this afternoon at 3pm. It's not on TV.
All 1,800 seats in the North Stand allocated to NUFC have now been sold and the tie is a 12,500 sellout.
Should the tie end in a draw, then they'll meet again at SJP on February 7th or 8th (unlike the previous round, no precise date has been announced).
This will be United's seventh domestic cup game of the season, the highest number since 2004/05 saw that total matched. The last season to exceed that figure was the 2001/02 campaign, with nine.
Whichever side progresses will take their place in the Fifth Round draw, now confirmed as taking place on BBC1's One Show on Monday night just after 7pm.
NUFC: Sammy Ameobi and Jamie Sterry are cup-tied but Aleksandar Mitrovic and Jesus Gamez are in the squad following injury. Jack Colback should be OK to resume following sickness.
Vurnon Anita and Rolando Aarons remain out. Massadio Haidara is anticipated to remain in the squad while it remains to be seen whether Cheick Tiote is still a Newcastle player.
OUFC: Christian Ribeiro and Sam Long are injured, but Toni Martinez goes into the squad following his loan signing from West Ham.
The 19 year-old Spanish-born striker netted twice against Newcastle U23s earlier in the season and hasn't yet played at senior level for the Hammers.
There's a Ryan Taylor in their squad, but it's not that Ryan Taylor - who now plays for Port Vale.
This will be Oxford's fifth game in the FA Cup this season, beginning with a 0-5 win at Merstham in Round One followed by a 0-0 draw at Macclesfield.
Winning the replay 3-0 at the Kassam, the U's then indulged in a spot of giant-killing in the Third Round - overcoming Championship side Rotherham United 3-2 at New York Stadium.
Michael Appleton's side moved up one place to 12th in League One on Saturday thanks to an eye-catching 0-4 victory at Rochdale. Their Checkatrade Trophy tie against Bradford City on Wednesday was postponed shortly before kick-off due to a frozen pitch.
Assisting Appleton at the Kassam is former Magpies coach Derek Fazackerley, reserve team manager and assistant coach at SJP between 1990 and 1995.
Referee: David Coote - second NUFC game of the season for the Nottinghamshire-based whistler, following the 0-1 home loss to Blackburn Rovers.
Travel: Engineering work between London Paddington and Oxford sees an amended timetable on Saturday.
Stadium postcode: OX4 4XP
The Kassam Stadium is around four miles from the centre of Oxford and there are around 2,000 free parking spaces in the vicinity - although these are expected to quickly fill up on Saturday.
Oxford Bus route 3A links the city centre to the ground and route city5 runs to and from the railway station and Blackbird Leys (5 mins from the ground).
UK TV: None
Overseas TV: None
UK Radio: None
Local Radio: Live on BBC Radio Newcastle.
(The official NUFC website now has free worldwide streaming of Radio Newcastle match commentaries)
(BBC Radio Oxford is also covering the tie)
Stats:
Our most recent visit to the University City was for the 1992/93 promotion season when Kevin Keegan's side were beaten 2-4 at the Manor Ground, winning the return game on Tyneside the following May.
Since then the Manor has been flattened and the U's have played at the three-sided Kassam since 2001.
Visits to Oxford are seldom comfortable though and we've failed to win any of our last four games there. The last five fixtures (all league) between the clubs have produced 27 goals; 2-1, 2-4, 2-5, 4-3 & 2-2.
This will be the first time the two clubs have met in this competition, but they clashed in the League Cup during both the 1983/84 and 1985/86 campaigns.
Magpies midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has reason to recall his visit to the Kassam, playing his final game for Swansea there in a 2-3 FA Cup Third Round upset a year ago - and finding himself barracked by some of the 1,500 travelling supporters.
And fellow Newcastle player Matt Ritchie also found himself the unwanted centre of attention at the same venue back in March 2012.
Playing for local rivals Swindon Town, Ritchie was cautioned by referee Graham Salisbury after kicking out at a ball boy he believed to be time-wasting.
The ball boy was actually an Oxford United youth player who later featured in the first team. There's no chance of a reunion on Saturday - he now plays in Norway.....

It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

With the greatest respect to Oxford, we should be capable of a fairly comfortable win here. However, it is the cup and anything can happen. I imagine Oxford will be well up for it and won't make it easy for us.
I'll go for 3-1.
I'll go for 3-1.
Kindly deeds done for free!

Think it's a good mix of youth and experience tbh, the likes of Hanley, Hayden, Mitrovic, Gamez, Perez and even Haidara know what they're doing.
I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?

Is he showing lack of respect to Oxford ? Although he has a strong bench if it doesn't go out way ! The bench again looks stronger without Tiote and Colback ! Thank gif they are not involved!

Re: Match day thread -FA Cup Oxford v NUFC
Just seen the line-up. My first thought is 'meh'. Are we realistically going to win the cup? Could it be detrimental to our automatic promotion push?
Having seen the run of games we have at the end of Feb/start of March (Brighton away, Huddersfield away, Reading away in the space of 8 days) I'd rather players had a week's rest and less exposed to injury.
