Go kick rocks Defoe. The guy will want one last big pay day - has never cared about winning, and although he should be commended for performing well into his 30s and longer than most of his striker peers, it's only a matter of time until he really declines.

I think he has one decent season left. Could argue that he could easily score the goals to keep us (or quite a few teams) up, therefore he'd more than pay back that outlay.I'm over Colo wrote:Go kick rocks Defoe. I'd happily have two goalscorers. And only one of those is a proven PL goalscorer.TJR wrote:So could Gayle and he's already here.Bodacious Benny wrote:

Gayle was top scorer for Crystal Palace for the last three seasons before joining us. Palace were in the Premier League all three of those seasons. To say he isn't a proven Premier League goalscorer is simply untrue.Bodacious Benny wrote:I'd happily have two goalscorers. And only one of those is a proven PL goalscorer.TJR wrote:

I agree we need more than one goal scorer. However there are plenty of better options out there than Defoe. Defoe is on the decline as a player, has no resale value and probably wouldn't even want to join us anyway.

Didn't he score 15 PL goals in 3 seasons for Palace?TJR wrote:Gayle was top scorer for Crystal Palace for the last three seasons before joining us. 25 in three seasons. Their top scorer in all three. Even despite Pardew bizarrely only using him as a sub in his last season.Bodacious Benny wrote:Didn't he score 15 PL goals in 3 seasons for Palace?TJR wrote:

23 according to the PL website, only one season where he got double figures when he got 10, seasons before were 7 and 6.TJR wrote:25 in three seasons. Their top scorer in all three. Even despite Pardew bizarrely only using him as a sub in his last season.Bodacious Benny wrote:

Not saying he can't do a job, but wouldn't say he's entirely proven as a PL striker.

Re: If Newcastle signed Defoe...
Defoe is undoubtedly a great player, but I think the days of us paying huge sums of money to players who are in the last few years of their careers are thankfully over.
Kindly deeds done for free!
Re: If Newcastle signed Defoe...
Agreed to go to Bournemouth, £130k a week apparently.
Decent agent.

He's always preferred the south - although I can't believe they're giving him those wages when they can still benefit from adding more depth to their side.TBC wrote:Agreed to go to Bournemouth, £130k a week apparently.

Re: If Newcastle signed Defoe...
He was always going to get a ridiculous wage because he was available on a free.
Re: If Newcastle signed Defoe...
Still, it surprises me that a club like Bournemouth are able to part with that much a week on one player.beardface wrote:He was always going to get a ridiculous wage because he was available on a free.

Re: If Newcastle signed Defoe...
Shows how much being in the PL nets you now if Bournemouth can pay those kind of wages. The weekly wage of a bog standard pl footballer is probably around £40k a week. It's part of the reason why the majority of fans are so detached from those on the field now. I've no problem with the best of the best earning decent money, but when you get someone completely average on about £50k per week it takes the piss.
