I was legitimately asking the question as I wasn't sure since you'd mentioned the oddity of being a national team captain and not club captain, chill out!Colly wrote:Is Harry Kane surrounded by a squad full of older senior internationals?

I think Kane's on the pecking order somewhere, but usually behind Lloris, Vertonghen, possibly Eriksen? No idea to be honest.

He captained once when Lloris was out according to wikipediaColly wrote:Sorry, intimidated by your avi...

Lascelles needs to stay for the good of the club, I can't see any other regular starter having the same mentality as him. Noone else seems to be a real leader, maybe Elliot?

Dyer did a podcast with The True Geordie recently, can watch it on YouTube. He says similar to what you’ve touched on here. It’s definitely worth a listen.ALF wrote:It's a weird one. People say Speed was the real 'captain' figure that players could go to for advice but Shearer led by example and would give bollockings.Heisen wrote:I preferred Nolan to Shearer. Shearer was a much more 'lead by example' captain which is fine, but I prefer my captains to be a real leader, rather than just given the armband because they're the best player. People forget but Shearer would very often go missing when the chips were down.

Re: Rumour: Lascelles
Suppose there's an element of it being slightly more 'convenient' to captian and give instruction from defence or midfield. In defence the game is there in front of you to assess what's happening, in midfield you're in the think of everything. Upfront you're obviously more focused on your next run, making space, getting on the shoulder of the last defender etc and spend less time assessing the overall setup or issues with the team.
Whether a captain leads by example or is more of an organiser is fine, both have merit. Ideally you would have a situation where you had a shearer and a Speed, when you have 1 leader on the pitch and 10 who find it easy to hide when the chips are down then you have a problem.

I think the whole captain thing is getting a little dated, these days you are more successful when you have multiple leaders stepping up all over the pitch, a GK shouting at his defence along with a centerback organising them, a midfielder pulling the strings and directing his midfield and a striker cheering his team on and fighting all over the pitch. Give me that over a single decent captain any day.

Re: Rumour: Lascelles
Ideally yes. But other than Lascelles, do we have anyone like that? The new keeper seemed authoritative but it's his debut, Ritchie isn't afraid to keep others in line but outside of that it's tough to think of any leaders who you'd really back when the chips are down. Elliot maybe, Clark and Shelvey (at times, certainly not always).Don Sholeone wrote:I think the whole captain thing is getting a little dated, these days you are more successful when you have multiple leaders stepping up all over the pitch, a GK shouting at his defence along with a centerback organising them, a midfielder pulling the strings and directing his midfield and a striker cheering his team on and fighting all over the pitch. I feel like this is a story that will continue to gather pace. Starting to get more nervous the closer we get to the transfer window. Personally feel he's worth a lot more to us than 30, but its an objectively realistic figure that will get the fat man's attention.
I'm hopeful that Lascelles will turn down any approach and stay here forever, but football is football

In today's market he's more than 30, but would we put it past Ashley to sell lascelles and then sell the club (netting himself an extra £30m essentially...).Oval85 wrote:He is a £50m man now, and Fatty knows it...CIH wrote:https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football ... p-12283092

I think we'll keep him one more season definitely, he's improving so much under Rafa that he'll see the long term value of waiting a year or two hopefully. Plus Chelsea are likely to have no CL football next season and a new manager.

I can see a few teams interested in him even at that price.Oval85 wrote:He is a £50m man now, and Fatty knows it...CIH wrote:https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football ... p-12283092

I reckon the top six would be interested in him. Youngish, English and a leader.Bodacious Benny wrote:Liverpool for sure, but they can **** off.Somebody's pinched my sombrero wrote: I can see a few teams interested in him even at that price.

Re: Rumour: Lascelles
I'm pretty sure there are rules against selling off assets/players for personal profit, I'm sure the money needs to stay within the club, also if that was to happen he only devalues the club so it's not really logical as he will lose out on club value and be no better off for it. If it was the case then any owner who wanted out would gut the club of all assets then bin it offBodacious Benny wrote:In today's market he's more than 30, but would we put it past Ashley to sell lascelles and then sell the club (netting himself an extra £30m essentially...).Oval85 wrote: He is a £50m man now, and Fatty knows it...

I think he'd play. Cahill is past it and they play three CBs. He's better than zouma who will be returning from his loan at Stoke.Footyfan wrote:If he goes to Chelsea, an it’s a big if ! Re: Rumour: Lascelles
I think Drinkwater thought he would play more after them paying 30 odd million for him ! Apart from Cahill, there’s Luiz , Christensen , Rudiger , Alonso , Azpilicueta , Chalobah , Zappacosta and a few younger lads , so he might be limited to game time! He should stay here and show a bit more next season!
