Sure I said on the players from relegated sides thread that I'd happily take him.

Yea, can't say he's the south Korean I would have chosen. Still, better than a team of Manquillos

Re: Ki Sung-yeung To Sign On a Free Transfer
One cheeky wikipedia search later, his wife's apparently a famous south koreanactress, so at least he'll be a bit well known for dem shirt sales.Eu estou Colo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:33 pmI think people may overestimate the profits to be made off adding a southeast Asian player to a PL side.
In all seriousness, he's a 29 year old midfielder, seems like a signing made to add depth and buy some time (i.e. 2 years) before we get someone longer term in. Or buyback Merino.

Depends on the player. Park was definitely a good financial move for Man UEu estou Colo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:33 pmI think people may overestimate the profits to be made off adding a southeast Asian player to a PL side.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:07 pmCant say I know alot about him as don't really see much of Swansea, can't complain about a free transfer that brings PL experience though, also probably pay for himself in marketing alone.

Re: Ki Sung-yeung To Sign On a Free Transfer
Because he was a good footballer. But they always had a huge fanbase there, and it takes millions of shirts to pay a player's salary - especially considering if they bought a Park shirt, they probably would have just bought a different Man U shirt had he not played there. I imagine the same could be said for foreign advertising too (in their case, because they've been the 1 or 2 biggest football club brand in the world for some time).PTAO? wrote: ↑Sat Jun 30, 2018 12:13 pmDepends on the player. It wasn't just shirts though, it was credit cards and everything.Eu estou Colo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 03, 2018 1:41 pmBecause he was a good footballer. You never make a players salary, agent fees and transfer fees back on merchandise. You can't come close to even making it back on one of them. Clubs make a tiny percent of a profit on shirt sales never mind anything else.

Son from spurs will miss the first 4 games of the season due to the Asia Cup apparently, presumably Ki will be called up too

I'm sure I saw that Son's missing Spurs first 4 games due to some sort of international commitment
Unless it was the first 4 games of 2019...

It's the Asian Games rather than Cup and incorporaties other sports and, presumably, similar to The Olympic football competition it is for younger players so Ki will not be participating.
The games take place between 18 August and 1 September 2018.

It's for under-23s with 3 overaged players allowed the same as The Olympics.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Tue Jul 17, 2018 7:55 pmSon is 26 and going.UlversToon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 17, 2018 7:49 pmIt's the Asian Games rather than Cup and incorporaties other sports and, presumably, similar to The Olympic football competition it is for younger players so Ki will not be participating.

From pictures taken of him training today he'll be wearing the number 4 jersey.
I'll Hazard a guess

Ki has openly said that he's considering retirement from the national team to focus on his club career. It's not decided yet as he has to discuss it with the Korean football association first, also depending on who will be the next manager for Korea. But if he does retire, he won't be missing in January due to the Asian Cup.

Hasn't he permanently deffered national service because of his involvement in the Asian games et all?

You're thinking of Son at Tottenham. Ki's done all his required national service, shortened for the same reason that Son's will be.
