Better than nothing. I suppose we've upgraded slightly on the players we've let go/were never gonna play for Rafa. But still an underwhelming transfer window. Really needed a LB(!) and another AM and FW.
Yeah, we have 3 FBs, 4 CB, 3 GK, 5 W, 4 CMs, 4 ST, 0 CAM. And I'm being very generous with some of the players I'm including (like Aarons), although admittedly didn't include Sterry or Longstaff, neither of whom have yet shown they should be in a PL squad.

It just seems really unbalanced, with a glaring lack of depth and starting quality.

I know he's been brought in mainly because of the Lejeune injury but he seems a bit expensive for a back up in the context of this window, I wonder what our first choice back line will be <scratch>

SSN reported he has signed an initial two year deal, which implies 2 year with option for third. So yeah, seems quite alot of money, in light of what the club seems to be willing to spend, for a 2/3 year deal.

I think had we brought in someone on loan like a Marlon type, they’d have been brought in purely for cover. With Fernandez, I think he pushes Clark down to 4th choice out of 4 (excluding Lejeune), and can legitimately challenge Schär for a starting spot.

Tend to agree. I'm glad we've gotten depth, because bad CBs can spell disaster. But I guess I'm a little surprised that they haven't shown the same commitment to accumulating depth at other positions, or in some cases, gotten a proper starter or back-up.

This. Or it could mean Rafa wants to use more of the three at the back system this year which would make sense to accommodate everyone, wouldn't something like this be interesting?

Dubraka
Yedelin Schar Lascelles Clark Kennedy
Shevely Diame
Perez
Rondon Muto

Subs : Darlow, Fernandez, Dummet, Ki, Ritchie, Atsu, Murphy.

Back ups/reserves : Ellliot, Sterry, Yarney, Aarons, Lazar, Longstaff, Manquillo, Saviet, Hayden, Joselu.

He was supposedly on Rafa's list and an 18m fee was agreed on as his price but Ashley wouldn't release the money for it

I feel like I need to build a bookmark to a post where I point out yet again that Colo was in the Championship team of the season, then the Premier League team of the season (the only Newcastle player to do so since Shay Given in our glory days), plus NE football writers player of the year in a year worth shouting about. Emulating easily the at least second best centre half I've seen here since the late 80s would be a pretty decent effort.

Yep Colo was brilliant for us once he got used to English football and before his home sickness set in.
