Match day - NUFC v Arsenal

Post by Toondes » Sat Sep 15, 2018 7:41 am

Arsenal (h)

The Magpies return to action this afternoon when Unai Emery brings his Gunners side to Tyneside for a non-televised, old-fashioned 3pm kick-off.

Tickets are now on public sale, with less than 500 remaining on Friday morning.

The Magpie Group intend to stage a protest across the road from the Sports Direct branch at SJP aka the NUFC club shop at 2.15pm details here

This game is one of several in the Premier League on Saturday chosen for VAR coverage - but none of the decisions made remotely will be communicated to the match referee.

As part of their ongoing trials, the Professional Game Match Officials organisation intend to simultaneously operate VAR at all five 3pm Premier League games on the day, to see if their system is fit for purpose.

However, there will be no communication to match officials regarding any incidents and no notifications within the stadium to spectators.

NUFC: Isaac Hayden is available after completing his three match suspension and Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey both return to the squad following injuries.

Long-term absentee Florian Lejeune remains out and given their long-distance return from international duty, Salomon Rondon and DeAndre Yedlin are not certain to feature in the starting lineup.

A 2-1 success at Gallowgate last April was our first home victory over Arsenal in ten PL games and one has to go back to 1994/95 (1-0) and 1995/96 (2-0) to find consecutive wins over them for NUFC at SJP.

Those successive victories came before the arrival of Arsene Wenger in September 1996, Stewart Houston in charge of the first and Bruce Rioch the second.

Emery has occupied the visiting dugout at SJP previously, seeing his Valencia side beaten 1-2 on Tyneside in a friendly match back in August 2008.

AFC: Laurent Koscielny, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Sead Kolasinac and Carl Jenkinson remain out but Lucas Torreira and Alex Iwobi are should be available.

Arsenal began the season with a 0-2 home defeat by Manchester City before going down 2-3 at Chelsea. Collecting their first points thanks to a 3-1 success against West Ham at the Emirates, they then went to Cardiff and ran out 3-2 winners.

All eight of their goals this season have been scored by different players (including an OG).

Referee: Lee Probert - first NUFC appointment of 2018 for this Wiltshire-based official, last spotted in charge of our 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion in November 2017.

Probert's most recent visit to Tyneside was for a 3-1 FA Cup home victory over Birmingham City back in January 2017.

The NUFC Fans Food bank collection station will be open from 1pm on Strawberry Place and they'll also have tickets for this fundraiser with no booking fee:

Song from the play "Close the Coalhouse Door" will be performed at the Venerable Bede Church on West Road on Friday 5th October at 7pm.

Travel:

Due to RMT strike action on Saturday, Northern Rail trains serving Newcastle will be reduced in number - particularly to and from Carlisle via Hexham and on the Durham Coast line.

Check before travelling and use alternatives - particularly for post-match journeys.

No scheduled Metro closures this weekend.

There's some bantsy protests going on outside the clubshop before kickoff. You know, where loads of people stand anyway. I hope they don't hurt beatbox Spiderman's profits.

One of my best mates emigrated to NZ not long after this, it was the last match that we went to see together.

What an afternoon that was, forever etched on my memory! Was almost tempted to walk out at 4-0 down but having paid £40 odd quid for a ticket stayed to the end and what an end it was!

Sneaky 1-0 win for the Toon today.

I tried to put a bet on at half time but couldn't get a phone signal.

Murphy on the wrong side yet again. Have to feel for him, doesn't get a chance.

I know he's been playing for Venezuala, but we have to be starting Rondon.

No complaints about the defence
Our lack of depth at left wing showing, but sensible to drop Kenedy after his last few performances. Time to see if Murphy is any better!
Rondon should be on.
Unsure why Hayden starts over shelvey, but if he's still recovering it might be to save him for the must win games.

Overall: pretty happy

If Shelvey is ok to be on the bench then I'd rather play him for 60 mins and see how he gets on. Kenedy definitely needed a kick up the arse, and I actually think Murphy has good potential so quite happy to see him.

Don't know where goals are going to come from. We always look completely hapless without Shelvey in the side, then add Joselu...ugh. I dream of a day where we have a few options in the centre of the park who can actually pass a ball or open things up.

Lascelles may be out...injured in warm-up. Nothing confirmed if he'll still start.

The footage of it looks grim. He was walking off the pitch pretty hobbled
