Match day thread: Chelsea v Newcastle (Sat, 5.30pm)

Newcastle recommence their Premier League fixtures on Saturday when they visit Stamford Bridge for a 5.30pm kick-off shown live on BT Sport.

NUFC: Ki Sungyueng and Yoshinori Muto are away on international duty at the Asian Cup but Florian Lejeune could be in contention for his first PL appearance of the season after his comeback in the FA Cup.

Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett are both doubtful starters after visiting a specialist in Spain this week - the former for assessment of his ongoing thigh issue, the latter regarding a long-standing hamstring injury.

There are also injury doubts over Mo Diame and Karl Darlow but Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark have both trained.

Kenedy cannot play against his parent club.

CFC: Cesc Fabregas looks like he's played his final game for the Blues and is in negotiations to leave the club.

Willian and Callum Hudson-Odoi are both doubtful.

Maurizio Sarri's side have won six and drawn four of their eleven PL home games this season, with only Leicester City taking maximum points, winning 1-0 last month.

Tuesday evening saw Chelsea beaten 0-1 by Spurs in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

If you aren't going to Stamford Bridge, The Ware Rooms on Carliol Square in Newcastle have the game live on their big screen TVs with food & drink offers.

The Ware Rooms are at 17 Carliol Square NE1 6UQ - 5 minutes walk from both Monument and Manors Metro.

First match this season for me and I’m wondering why I actually bothered buying a ticket <laugh>

We definitely won’t score...Hayden and Schar in CM?

This feels like Norwich 2011 all over again.

At least we scored twice that day, can't see that happening tomorrow.

Even with Bielsa pre-match preparation tactics; we're screwed.

Double your money and bet on Chelsea -2.

I have zero expectations that we will get anything from this game. And with Burnley v Fulham and Cardiff v H'sfield it is very likely we'll be 17th tomorrow evening.

Fun times.

I’m back to the stage of genuinely not being bothered if we go down. Regardless of what people we say we wouldn’t get relegated from the Championship, aiming to finish 17th in the PL benefits nobody but Ashley.

Heard a bit of the phone in earlier and someone said "why should we have a go, we'd be back to when we'd turn up with Pardew and get battered". Or draw, then win 2-0 with one of the best goals I've ever seen as some might call it. Granted there were a few losses afterwards but I'd take that over a default 1-0 loss every time at best because that's what we're targeting.

His plan has consistently failed this season so a sensible person would try something else. But we have Rafa so that won't happen.

The thing is we aren't even achieving narrow losses any more, so even the goal difference argument is losing whatever credibility it had. (not that I thought it ever had any to begin with)

I'd find it easier to accept a loss against teams we're expected to get beaten by if we won the games against sides we're supposed to beat but we just seem to under-perform against everybody.

I hoe that made sense.

To be fair, we'd get battered under Pardew while still not playing attacking football. But I otherwise agree, drab play resulting in a loss is the worst situation. We currently only have one way to play, and it's a setup used for opponents like Chelsea, that's no more effective against teams like Cardiff.

I'm totally ok with sitting back tomorrow and trying to score something on a counter or set piece. Regardless of how we've performed up to now it's freaking away at Chelsea. Even a one-goal loss will suffice. I just hope the performance isn't ghostly and we look like we have a plan, even if we're outdone by a more talented squad.

Diame should be fit tomorrow, although we might as well keep him fresh for Cardiff and not bother playing him.

Saturday 17:30 K.O. live on BT Sports watched by the drinking/footballing nation?

It can only be a hammering of the most embarrassing kind!

Even Lawro has us down for a defeat!

There'll be cockney pundits slagging us off left right and centre as we huff and puff to get a touch.

Hazard hat-trick and a toon sending off.

I'll go 1 1 <laugh>

The precious goal difference.
