Mata would be a fantastic signing alright, but unless he takes a drop in wages we won't be signing him.

Mata is capable of playing deeper then the attacking mids positions I say he'd work very well in a deep lying playmaker role in our 3-4-3/ 5-4-1 formation.

He's capable of playing deeper, but not deep enough to have three attacking players ahead of him at a team like ours. Our formation relies on having fairly orthodox centre mids like a Hayden, Ki or Diame to work, Mata would leave us massively exposed.

I wouldn't argue Perez is a better player, but I do think a 31 year old attacking midfielder who isn't going to play every game isn't a great replacement for him should he go.

I'd have Perez over Mata. Mata has more quality than Perez but the defensive work that Perez put in last year was the best in the league for an attacking player, massively underrated part of his game. And Mata runs a bit like he's towing a caravan now.

And I'll admit to feeling that your second furthest forward's defending is an overrated trait. I'd add that his defensive effort has justified his inclusion in the lineup despite very inconsistent production for years, so it's hard to call it underrated.

Though do I actually think it'd be a simple like-for-like swap? No. If Perez does leave, I'd want a different player than Mata. But I'd selfishly love to cheer for Mata again...even though I don't think there's anything to this rumour.

Just saw as well that Dortmund have signed Julian Brandt. Some good strengthening to replace Pulisic. Suppose looking long term with Reus a bit long in the tooth as well. Brandt, Hazard, Sancho and Reus not bad options up front. Probably need someone replace Alcacer, but that Alex Isak supposedly very highly rated.
