Return of Andy Carroll
Re: Return of Andy Carroll
I'd heard he'd hired his own fitness coach after he left West Ham so may be fitter than people think.
Scored 1 in 3 for us.

And in conclusion, how far had you got through reading this before you realised it was my signature?

Re: Return of Andy Carroll
At best hes going to be 3rd choice, i dont think anyone is expecting anything amazing from him, the nostalgia plays a big part but there is no denying he has quality when he is fit and offers something different, i dont see who we can realistically sign that would have that same ability and be happy to be 3rd maybe 4th choice.Blue & Maroon wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 2:26 pmHe should be better than Joselu IF he's fit. He hasn't had a good season for years now, he's 30 and he's had no pre season. It's not one to get excited about.Colly wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 12:48 pm
Is there a better cheap striker out there available on a free? Obviously the local bit is a bonus, but reading the rumours about terms it looks like a can't lose for us. If he's s*** he won't play, if he's good he will. Personally thinking back to that season and a half when he was just barging through defenses he was the closest thing we've had to Shearer since Shearer. If he can be even half that it's better than what Joselu has managed, plus he's a handy trainer for Sorensen.
Like I really hope he does well but I can't see why people are buzzing about it, like I've said if he wasn't local there would be a lot nore people asking why the f*** are we signing a 30 year old perma crock with a naff goalscoring record?

I'm not buzzing, but for the no fee and low wages I don't see an issue. I'd have taken Austin too as a backup option for £4m had we gone down that route. We're not talking about someone who we'd intend to play every week even if they could stay fit, it's just a cheap option from the bench. It's also a bit like this RB, for £4m he may or may not fill a hole or do a job, we were never going to go out and spend another £20-£30m on a striker after signing Joelinton or mega money on a defender, that's the situation we're in so just got to go with it.
We've probably spent around £30m when you factor in what we received for Perez (£60m spent roughly and £30m received), I doubt Ashley ever had any intention of spending the £50m he claimed Rafa would have had (plus sales).

I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?

Re: Return of Andy Carroll
On a free, for peanuts wages, to replace Joselu on the bench. I mean Rondon's goalscoring record wasn't exactly glorious and we brought him in as first choice. As something different with Muto on the bench too I think it's a good signing.
As for people getting excited of course that's partly because he's local and partly because of what he was 8 years ago, but I don't see any real problem with that. The amount of negativity around the club despite what's been a pretty excellent transfer window (we even signed full backs. We never sign full backs) has been insane, so a break from that has been nice.
Edit: Christ I missed a whole page. Sorry if I've just restated what's already been said...

Re: Return of Andy Carroll
Nostalgia and local pride is a real part of football. People dismiss people's interest in him because of that, but it's a legitimate thing, and sports are all just a fun distraction anyway, so if people get a kick out of his return story, good for them.
I have no expectations of him at this stage, but it doesn't look like he's a replacement for anyone better, so with a cheap, short contract, seems pretty harmless...unless Saylor returns and a boxing match breaks out resulting in an actually valuable teammate taking a stray punch.

Re: Return of Andy Carroll
He's a shadow of the player he could have been when he left for Liverpool.
Is he a better option than Joselu? Certainly but that's a low bar to beat.

He's been terrible these last couple of seasons, but if he's match fit, imagine the fear of the oppo's defence when he comes on. I mean, even if he doesn't score, he'll spread the pain around, and spread it liberally. Big Andy on a pay-as-you-play? Bring it on!

As an impact sub, obviously. I don't see him as a starter, even over Muto.ToonViking wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 4:40 pmimagine the fear of the oppo's defence when he comes on.

Re: Return of Andy Carroll
I see him being plan B for the last 10/15mins of the game. We can then lump it forward to him and hope it sticks. Let’s all hope he rediscovers his form for us!
