Match Thread - Spurs v NUFC

Post by ScottishGeordie43 » Fri Aug 23, 2019 9:28 am

Probably like most fans, this Sunday's game is looking extremely grim to me. Can't see anything past a 3+ goal deficit in Spurs' favour. Funnily enough I'm actually a bit gutted I won't be there, as I'm keen to check out their new ground, and I've haven't had an away day in ages. But footballing wise, my early season optimism has been crushed. What do we reckon? Damage limitations and try and avoid a hammering? Or have a go in hope of sneaking something? Hopefully someone can lift my spirits <erm>

I predict a 2-0 loss, but I guess I'm not actually as downtrodden as everyone else. I actually thought week 1 went about as well as I expected, and last week was a shambles. But with a bunch of new faces (who came in late) and a new mediocre manager, I expected some early bumps. A lot of teams are going to lose to Spurs this season, especially away, so I won't read much into this match either.

I don't think Steve even knows what damage limitation is.

It'll be another loss and Steve will come out with some random crap as a reason to why we didn't do very well but claim everyone tried.

Fire the cronut.

Match thread - Spurs v NUFC

Post by Toondes » Fri Aug 23, 2019 2:43 pm

Spurs (a)

This Sunday sees The Magpies make their first appearance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - last season's scheduled visit being switched to Wembley Stadium following construction delays.

The Magpies have sold their full 3,000 allocation and those places are located in the lower tier of the North East Corner. The photo above shows Aston Villa fans occupying that area earlier this month.

The game is a 60,000 sell-out and it's a 4.30pm start, live on Sky Sports.

Spurs have published a guide to their new home which can be downloaded online here. Worthy of note is their very strict policy on bags and the fact that the entire stadium is cashless.

This will become the 58th different ground we've played on competitively in the Premier League.

NUFC: Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Florian Lejeune remain unavailable, but Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin are both expected to feature.

Christian Atsu has returned to training this week.

Coral matchday betting is online here:

12/1 Newcastle to win
19/4 the draw
1/4 Spurs to win
33/1 Newcastle to win 1-0
7/1 match to end in a score draw
16/1 match to end 0-0

Their "Your Call" option allows you to create bespoke odds and we've cobbled some together:

THFC win to nil, score 3.5 or more 11/2
THFC win to nil, win at HT & FT 6/4
THFC win, draw at HT 29/10
THFC win, BTTS, THFC score both halves 13/5
NUFC win to nil 22/1

Coral's free-to-enter "Correct Four" prediction competition this weekend is devoted to the Liverpool versus Arsenal game on Saturday.

All four correct predictions wins £50, with three rewarded by a free £2 bet and two correct resulting in a free £1 punt. Enter online here

THFC: Heung-min Son is available for the first time this season after completing a suspension. Missing out are Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon, Juan Foyth and Tanguy Ndombele but Dele Alli could return.

The Cockerels have four points from their opening two games, coming from behind to beat Aston Villa at home and then levelling twice to claim a point from a 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Travel:

Updated travel advice issued by Spurs is here

This game coincides with the closure of London Kings Cross station, with no trains running beyond Peterborough on Saturday and Sunday.

That will cause massive travel problems across the Bank Holiday weekend and although it is possible to travel to London from Newcastle on matchday with extended journey times, in reality there's a very high probability of further delay and disruption.

And as for getting home, good luck with that - if you're quick off the mark at full time there is a connection via Bedford to a 22.22 departure from Peterborough reaching Newcastle at 02.08.

Alternatively that same 02.08 arrival can be intercepted at Doncaster by going via Sheffield or York by going via Manchester.

Replacement buses will run between Peterborough and Bedford, allowing passengers to continue their journey to and from London St. Pancras (next door to Kings Cross).

In addition, there are engineering works at Newark that will further disrupt some train services across the weekend.

Network Rail confirm that no alcohol will be allowed on those replacement bus services - that's a requirement for all journeys of this type and has nothing to do with football fans travelling on them.

PS: Cross Country Trains have announced various cancellations and bus replacement services on Sunday. They don't serve any London stations, but if anyone's alternative route to or from Spurs includes their services, check your timings.

Further information is online here

Travel 2:

There's no metro service between Wallsend and Tynemouth all day Saturday and until 6.30pm on Sunday. Replacement bus 900 operates.

Referee: Mike Dean - the Magpies failed to win any of the three games involving them that he took charge of last season: a 1-2 home loss to Wolves, a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth and the 1-1 stalemate away at Brighton.

Spurs followers meanwhile have their own issues with the Wirral whistler, whose handling of a 1-2 defeat at Burnley in February inflamed Mauricio Pochettino to such an extent that he ended up with a two match touchline ban and £10K fine.

The VAR man waiting in the Sky this Sunday is Anthony Taylor.

It'll be interesting to see how we respond to that mess last week but i'm not optimistic we'll get a result as he's already mentioned he's sticking with that formation <neg>

He's showing Pardew level of stubbornness already. This isn't going to end well for him.

No one is looking forward to or expecting anything more than a shower of s*** performance on Sunday. A draw would be a huge plus, a win currently unfathomable.

3-0 to Spurs, if we're lucky.

Messing with that formation can only come up with this
<dubravka>
<schar> <fernandez> <dummett>
<krafth> <hayden> <longstaff> <ritchie>
<almiron>
<saintmaximin> <joelinton>

Prefer 5-2-3 but it's better than this <roll>

I mean, is it the formation that's broken, or who and how they executed it? I don't know if using a formation that was used in all of pre-season for a third straight week really reflects that much stubbornness (yet) <erm>

I'd say it's more how he's executed it more than it's broken i'd prefer us to go back to what we had at the end of last season with a front 3 but if he's going to keep with the 3 in midfield i'd prefer to push that extra guy higher not sit in behind.

Speaking of formations the U23's having lost both matches this season have changed theirs to a 4-3-3 i know it's not really relevant to the first team.
Fernandez back from injury as well having a decent game as well by all accounts.
Losing 2-0, 2 goals in 2 mins #Bruceout <fist>
