Though I'd add, don't know if anyone debating between those two options can be called an "ace"; and I could imagine if he's focusing on his masters, he might prefer a less professional option.

I know I passed on even playing hockey when doing my masters in Newcastle, because I didn't want to commit the time to it when paying so much for international tuition...and because their expectations of me being Canadian were maybe too high.

First step would be for them to stop worrying about who should support who. Feels smalltime to be so petty and territorial like that (and I know every club have fans guilty of it).
I totally agree. I mean a Liverpool fan from Dover is a bit of a stretch, but a Sunderland fan from North Shields shouldn't raise any eyebrows.

I lived in Dover for a couple of years and there were a fair few Liverpool fans there at the time and most had familial connections to Liverpool.

Never saw a Mackem in Dover though. Too close to Yewrope?

Hope you've recovered from that.

I know loads of Liverpool fans and some claim a family reason but it's normally a bit flimsy.

Know a few Mackems down this way as well. Was playing in the same team as one during the '6 in a row' spell <puke>

I'd kinda already assumed they weren't going to break back into the playoffs, of if they somehow did, no way were they winning out. It'd be beautifully ironic if their Donald's old club Oxford did get promoted though!

They're in pretty serious trouble, which I don't even wish upon them. Donald probably had good intentions when he bought them, and it certainly didn't seem like they had other prospective owners to choose from at the time, but it was always dangerous for him to plan, and frankly need to flip the club in such short order. Can maybe get away with that with clubs that have been running a small budget in the lower leagues, but not one saddled with PL-level debt and contracts.

How many years did the 6-in-a-row span? Three or four seasons? I'd like them to stay in League 1 for that amount of time, then come back, but stay just a bit shitter than us every year.

Hopefully with new owners we can expand the hallowed ground and welcome those less fortunate a tad further south to witness football being played

Apparently BZG (who were looking at buying Newcastle) are now in for them. If someone has a huge pile of money and wants to throw it at a football club then Sunderland are one of the best options out there on the face of it. Huge fanatical fanbase, big ground, good facilities, decent history etc. However, the fact that nobody has despite the club only being worth £30-40m is alarming. That tells me there is something hideous behind the scenes that scares people off. There's talk of it being the £20m that Donald borrowed from the club to help him buy it <laugh>.

Tbf £30-40m is just awful value for a club in League 1. You could probably get an established Championship team without the baggage for that. Frankly, even in League 1, why would you go for Sunderland over a club like Ipswich? At least as much history (and much more in Europe), much lower cost base, albeit worse facilities. Without guarantees of promotion, investing in a club like Sunderland in that league is a big risk.
