Match thread - WBA v NUFC (Fa cup)

Post by Toondes » Tue Mar 03, 2020 10:15 am

West Brom (a)

This evening sees Newcastle in FA Cup Fifth Round action at Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion.

It's an 8pm kick-off at the Hawthorns and our 5,050 allocation in the Smethwick End is sold out.

WBA are advising that away fans must gain access to Smethwick End turnstiles via the pedestrian route on Middlemore Road, rather than through the gate that adjoins the main stand.

With Fifth Round replays abolished, were the scores level after 90 minutes then 30 minutes extra time would be played and then a penalty shootout if required.

The winners will take their place in the Quarter Final draw, staged after BBC's live coverage of the Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City tie on Wednesday night.

This tie will be televised live via both the BBC red button and the BBC Sport online website.

(Note that some outlets claim that our tie is also available via the iplayer, but the schedule for that service still shows the Chelsea versus Liverpool tie. Adding to the confusion are the BBC themselves)

NUFC: Valentino Lazaro will be available following his one match suspension but Andy Carroll, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett remain sidelined. Emil Krafth has returned to training but it's unclear whether he's ready to play as yet.

With one eye on Saturday's Premier League game at Southampton, Dwight Gayle, Jonjo Shelvey and Allan Saint-Maximin will drop out of the starting XI - and it's unclear whether any of them will be named among the substitutes.

Coral matchday betting is online here

Score after 90 minutes:
NUFC win 19/10

WBA win 29/20

Paddy Power betting odds online here

Either team to win in extra time 5/1
Either team to win on penalties 4/1
NUFC to win in extra time 10/1
NUFC to win on penalties 9/1

WBAFC: Callum Robinson and Kamil Grosicki are cup-tied, while Romaine Sawyers is suspended. Kieran Gibbs is expected to return to the side.

Ahmed Hegazi is out after being forced off due to injury in Saturday's game, with Grady Diangana and Nathan Ferguson already out.

Albion currently lead the table by a single point from Leeds, following a 0-1 home loss to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Referee: Anthony Taylor - first time since a home PL victory over Southampton in April 2019 that we've encountered the Cheshire official.

As was the case for our ties at fellow EFL sides Rochdale and Oxford, VAR won't be in operation here.

Stats:

Managed by Slaven Bilic, the Baggies made it through to the Fifth Round thanks to successive 1-0 away wins at Charlton Athletic and West Ham United.

We last faced them in the FA Cup back in January 2010, losing 2-4 at the Hawthorns in the Fourth Round - with both teams in the second tier that season. Some lad called Andy Carroll scored twice.

That was the fourth Baggies versus Magpies pairing in this competition, after 1938 (lost 0-1 away in Third Round), 1954 (lost 2-3 away in Fifth Round) and 1974 (won 3-0 away in Fifth Round).

That 1974 meeting is well-remembered, coming after Newcastle progressed through the Third and Fourth Rounds beating lower league sides in replays.

The situation has been repeated in 2019/20, with Albion in the second tier as they were 46 years ago and Newcastle one league above them.

NUFC last 10 Fifth Round ties:

2005/06 Southampton (h) won 1-0
2004/05 Chelsea (h) won 1-0
2001/02 Manchester City (h) won 1-0
1999/00 Blackburn Rovers (a) won 2-1
1998/99 Blackburn Rovers (a) won 1-0 (0-0 h)
1997/98 Tranmere Rovers (h) won 1-0
1994/95 Manchester City (h) won 3-1
1992/93 Blackburn Rovers (a) lost 0-1
1989/90 Manchester United (h) lost 2-3
1986/87 Spurs (a) lost 0-1

Magpies @ Throstles - last 10:

2017/18 Drew 2-2 Clark, og(Evans)
2015/16 Lost 0-1
2014/15 Won 2-0 Perez, Coloccini
2013/14 Lost 0-1
2012/13 Drew 1-1 Gouffran

I would like to see us play something like this:
Dubravka
Yedlin Lascelles Lejeune Rose
Hayden Bentaleb
Lazaro Almiron Maximin
Joelinton
I am assuming Darlow will start. I would like to see Bentaleb get a chance with Hayden next to him so he can play a bit more advanced and new reports suggest Maximin may well be starting tonight and I would start Gayle or Muto up top but not sure if they are available. That team should beat West Brom, especially if they make changes as expected.

1-2 win

Newcastle supporters are being urged to restrict all celebrations at the game tonight in order to reduce the possibility of spreading coronavirus through bodily contact and cheering in close proximity.

Steve Bruce said "As a community club; we've got to do our utmost to protect our fans and I know the players will do their part."

The UK Health Agency urges supporters attending tonight’s matches to calm down celebrations and asks that instead of cheering loudly and bouncing up and down; why now elbow bump fellow fans or go for the tried and tested “jazz hands” celebration.

“Obviously we’re not expecting everyone to comply with these simple celebratory swaps; especially those f***ing Newcastle fans who can’t sit the f*** down” said a spokesperson for the agency, “so we’ve been in touch with the club and they’ve assured us that the overall plan for Tuesday night is that Newcastle faithful will have f*** all to celebrate anyway.”

I like it. Hope Bentaleb can step up as he's been underwhelming so far.

So Bruce goes on about changing things and after one game goes back to Joelinton up front on his own?

Brunt and Barry playing against us. Always liked both, Brunt in particular has always maximised what talent he has and worked hard.

There must be something in his contract that says he has to start every game!

Yeah I saw that. I'd imagine Almiron in no 10 and Lazaro out wide but what do I know.
Or a 541...
