It'd be good to see some young, exciting players coming in like Dwight McNeil from Burnley (only 20, can beat his man and gets great crosses in), Edouard from Celtic (22), Grealish (24) etc. Ziyech would have been great but he's agreed a move to Chelsea I think. As well as a few more experienced names. Focus in the first couple of years or so would be to establish top 6 (if this takeover even happens so entirely hypothetical). Everton have shown that just spending big doesn't guarantee you anything.

Whoever we sign we need to prioritise strikers who can actually score <laugh>

What's the general consensus on Rafa potentially coming back?
I'm not too sure about it tbh, I'd prefer him over Bruce but if people like Poch or Allegri are available I'd be inclined to go with 1 of them for a fresh start.
There will always be the argument that Rafa could have been excellent with a big budget but I think that ship has sailed.

I’d take him back as if he was given 2 or 3 seasons he’d lay the foundations for us to be successful and have the backing of the majority of fans. Realistically if this even goes through we’re not going to be winning trophies in that time as Liverpool and Man C are absolute light years ahead of us, so would Allegri (or even Poch) fancy that? The initial phase would be about building something sustainable and I think Rafa would smash that.

That's a good point tbf, hopefully the new owners will have patience and the sense to know this project won't be an over night success. Also Rafa would already know the strengths and weaknesses of the squad and where we should prioritize new players. What ever happens it should be an exciting time ahead of us

Based on what Poch has been saying it sounds like he’s not against a project like us so I’d go for him. Rafa was great for us but I personally think there’s better.

I understand wanting him back but the desperation of some to have him back is a bit weird. The one thing that would be good is that he has proven he ‘gets it’ which could set the club attitude and foundations for longer term success.

I've seen some stuff saying Poch isn't a winner because he's never won anything, which is a terrible argument that comes up quite a lot. Alec McCleish won the league cup with Brum, so by that logic he's automatically better? Poch has proven with Spurs that he can build and develop a team to an elite level, bringing through youth prospects as he go. If he's available and interested, he has to be the first choice.

Whilst I think Benitez is allowed a little more leniency than most, he is a good manager and did a decent job with us. He's another project builder and again, be a good option. Poch would be the first choice for me, for various reasons. A lot of the rumours seem to indicate we will be going down a director of football/recruitment committee kind of format post takeover, should it happen. I wonder if either of those two managers would be willing to work within that.

I wouldn't have been against looking at someone below the "elite" level of managers, AVB for example. He's since seemingly distanced himself from the role. Wouldn't have been my first choice with all available, but I think he has it in him to build and develop, just was never really given the time at Chelsea and latterly Spurs.

I'd rather have Pardew back.

I'd said it before, if we're giving "Ashley free clean slates" Rafa has to wait his turn behind Keegan, Kinnear, Shearer, Hughton, Pardew and McLaren.

Turn? surely you choose the one with the best CV? Keegan has had some success, McLaren a long time ago. But Rafa's CV is way above them all.

It was enormously tongue in cheek. If you want a deadly serious answer then no I don't want Rafa back.

Rafa was a massive coup for us, but if we are to be taken over and potentially become the richest club in the world with the relevant ambition to boot then you have to look beyond Rafa. In the context of world football right now he probably struggles to make the top 20 managers.

If this goes through then we are in a position to look forward rather than be looking back.

I think you're forgetting a certain John Carver, the best coach of his day.

I'm not too fussed about who takes over, as long as we play decent football and are enjoyable to watch. I hate to say it but it really has been a long time since Newcastle have been in any way entertaining, for the right reasons anyway!

I'm almost more interested in who gets hired as the director of football, not that I would know the names of the best candidates. But I don't care how rich the owner is, they to need to hire the right minds to spend money well.

I love him. <urgh>

But depends of the new owners, sporting director, manager... we have five CBs + Dummett. Maybe one of them will be sold.

I biasedly like the Jonathan David rumour. Would love an exciting young Canadian player playing for us!

Is he regarded as a good prospect then? I've not heard of him.

That Alphonso Davies lad from Bayern would do me ;)
