Matchday Thread: Newcastle United vs Aston Villa
The second game of United's restarted Premier League season sees them host Aston Villa behind closed doors at St. James' Park this evening.
Kick-off is at 6pm and the game will be shown live on BT Sport.
Some season ticket holders have received emails from NUFC with a voucher allowing free access to view this game. Unlike the Sky/Now freebie, this one is one per household, not one per ST holder.
The last meeting of these sides on Tyneside came during our 2016/17 Championship-winning season, when Yoan Gouffran and a Henri Lansbury own goal gave Rafa Benitez's side a 2-0 success.
In the Villa dugout that night? Steve Bruce.
Fast forward to 2020 and a home win would give Bruce three successive PL victories for the first time as Magpies boss.
We last managed that under Rafa Benitez during November 2018 (Watford home 1-0, Bournemouth home 2-1 and Burnley 2-1 away).
And at kick-off, the black and whites had failed to concede a goal at SJP in all competitions for a magnificent 454 minutes (363 minutes in the PL).
NUFC: There don't appear to be any casualties from Sunday's game, with Matty Longstaff a possible addition to the bench.
Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark and Sean Longstaff are all unfit.
AVFC: Bjorn Engels is out and John McGinn is doubtful.
Dean Smith's side drew 0-0 at home with Sheffield United in their opening restart game before losing 1-2 at Villa Park to Chelsea last Sunday. They've managed just a single win in nine PL outings.
On the road this season, Villa have won twice (at Norwich and Burnley), drawn twice (at Manchester United and Leicester) and lost 11 times.
The 32 goals conceded away from Villa Park during those 15 games make them the leakiest PL defence and they've failed to keep a clean sheet in any of them.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire). Third game this season involving the Magpies, following the 2-2 home draw with Manchester City and 1-0 success over Chelsea at Gallowgate.
VAR: Peter Bankes - tuning in for his third successive Newcastle game.
Stats:
The Villans are winless on Tyneside in their most recent 11 visits, since the infamous 0-3 game of April 2005, when Newcastle ended up with eight men on the field.
A 2-0 success at Villa Park last November gave them a first win over ourselves anywhere in thirteen attempts.

Nice that we can look up without too much worry about the bottom 3, a win tonight cements mid-table obscurity which I’d have been delighted with at the start of the season.
I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?

Its also been 15 years since Villa won at our place, so their bound to win.

2-0 Toon win after a drab 0-0 first half, just hope the crowd don't turn on the players whilst it remains scoreless!
