Match day - Man City v Newcastle United

Post by Toondes » Wed Jul 08, 2020 5:35 am

The games keep on coming for Newcastle and they are in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Manchester City in the Premier League.

It's a 6pm kick-off.

Live coverage is on BT Sport, but they have confirmed that the free pass offer arranged via the Premier League applies to home season ticket holders only - meaning that Toon fans won't qualify for any.

That differs from the BT-televised home meeting with Aston Villa last month, when SJP ST holders could tune in for free, but Villa fans were obliged to subscribe.

(Thanks to those who told us that EE customers are able to watch via the BT Sport app free for a limited time.)

Team: Newcastle's injury list is beginning to lengthen, with Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff joining Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark on the sidelines.

Speaking on Tuesday, Steve Bruce also expressed doubts over the availability of Jamaal Lascelles, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Andy Carroll for Wednesday.

21 different players have seen first team action in our five games since football returned. Yet to be used are Yoshinori Muto and Christian Atsu.

PMCFC: Sergio Aguero remains out.

Pep Guardiola's side slipped to a 0-1 defeat at Southampton on Sunday. They last lost back-to-back PL matches in December 2018.

The last home PL goal that City conceded was a 90th minute OG by Fernandinho in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in January.

Since then they've overcome West Ham (2-0), Arsenal (3-0), Burnley (5-0) and Liverpool (4-0).

Referee: Andy Madley - second outing of the season for Bobby's brother, following on from the 0-0 home draw with Burnley back in February.

VAR: Andre Marriner

Stats:

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last six PL outings, since a 0-1 reverse away at Crystal Palace in February.

That run under Bruce equals the longest unbeaten top-flight sequence that Rafa Benitez presided over, in the closing six games of the 2015/16 season.

To find a longer PL unbeaten run by Newcastle one has to go back to the opening months of the 2010/11 campaign, when Alan Pardew's side went 11 games without defeat before losing at... Manchester City.

Following victories at Southampton and Bournemouth, Wednesday sees United seeking a third successive PL away win.

They last achieved that under Sir Bobby Robson back in December 2001 (Ipswich Town won 1-0, Arsenal won 3-1, Leeds United won 4-3).

Magpies @ Etihad:

2018/19 Lost 1-2 Yedlin
2017/18 Lost 1-3 Murphy
2015/16 Lost 1-6 Mitrovic
2014/15 Lost 0-5
2014/15 Won 2-0 Aarons, Sissoko (LC)
2013/14 Lost 0-4
2012/13 Lost 0-4
2011/12 Lost 1-3 Gosling
2010/11 Lost 1-2 Gutierrez
2008/09 Lost 1-2 Carroll
2007/08 Lost 1-3 Martins
2006/07 Drew 0-0
2005/06 Lost 0-3
2004/05 Drew 1-1 Shearer

Yeah, even when they were s*** we were crap there.

We should just rest anyone that's played a lot of minutes, throw in a bunch of fresh players and just go at them, if we get spanked by 4 or 5 so be it. We pick up again at weekend with a fresh first team.

Haha that's the one game I've been to at the Etihad as well. Was sat with City fans and before the match was naively concerned about my reaction if we scored. Turns out I was worried for nothing <laugh>

Against City? I think ultra defensive is probably the best tactic going and then reassess if it looks like they're having an off day. We were unbelievably s**** against them in the FA Cup, but we only lost 2-0. If we try and attack them and they're having a good day, they'll put 6 past us without any difficulty at all. It's an absolutely nothing game for us (in the sense that we will get nothing) so I'd really rather lose 2-0 than 6-0. Goal difference might help us this season.

With the number of current injuries, do we even have a bunch of fresh players?

And won't somebody think of the goal differential! <roll>

Someone work it out. Farth in a back 3/5? Or one of the full backs in Santon style CM?

Looks like it's Krafth out of position at CB. He doesn't exactly fill me with confidence in his preferred slot. I can see why Bruce wants to play 5 at the back, but was hoping the injuries would rule it out. Square peg, meet round hole.
