IFAB Set to Continue with 5 Subs Rule for 2020/21 Season
https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... e-18561294
IFAB are set to carry the rule allowing 5 substitutes into the 2020/21 season giving the PL the option to use this again next season.
I think it's a good idea!
Thoughts?

I'd much prefer 3 regular subs +2 youth player subs. I've wanted something similar for a while and I think this is the perfect moment

Only 5, after tonight I was hoping we could replace the bloody lot at half-time or at the earliest the first drinks break!

There are definitely some negatives for it, but I think we've benefitted from it so far. The way I see it is that we play more of our games against the smaller clubs than we do against the bigger clubs. We didn't lose 5-0 last night because City were afforded two extra substitutes . They already have the benefit of having a much better squad than most other clubs which is why they're in the top 2 every season. Against Southampton, they only used two substitutes (both on 59 mins) and lost 1-0 though!
The other main drawback for me is the temptation to just fill the bench out with superstars too. I think the rule suggested above relating to homegrown players would be useful.

I like the idea of this much more. 2 subs who are U21 and homegrown. Really would encourage development of academies.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 4:32 pmI'd much prefer 3 regular subs +2 youth player subs. I've wanted something similar for a while and I think this is the perfect moment

This is far too sensible an idea to actually happen. Would be good if it did though, makes a lot of sense.Speedo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 7:53 amI like the idea of this much more. 2 subs who are U21 and homegrown. the top three clubs that have been using the most subs since the resumption of the league Liverpool, Man City and Brighton. While I'm sure most people are surprised with Brighton being in the top three and point at it being an example of the less financially stronger clubs taking 'advantage' of the rule, it will over the course of a season be an advantage to the more financially stronger clubs.
While Brighton were bringing on the likes of Bissouma, Mooy and Connolly, Liverpool were able to bring on Robertson, Mane, Fabinho and Minamino.
Hopefully there will be the asterisk on the five subsituations that two will have to be homegrown.

Re: IFAB Set to Continue with 5 Subs Rule for 2020/21 Season
My argument in favour of it is that Liverpool have absolutely pissed the league this season, and for the most part they were only allowed three subs. Giving them another couple of subs isn't going to drastically change the outcome for them. If we're playing Liverpool and we can both make 3 subs, they can still put on 3 better players than we can.
I think with an extra couple of subs, the last quarter of the match will be better, we will have fewer injuries and younger players might get a bit more than just a two minute cameo at the end.

I'd still rather young players be loaned out or get real development time somewhere than wait for a bit part substitution once in a while. And I question how often risk adverse managers would choose to use an additional two youth subs if they wouldn't trust them with one of the 3 traditional subs?

I'll probably back track on this when we're losing 1-0 but absolutely battering the team we're playing and they decide to use all 5 subs separately after 90 minutes.

I'll backtrack when the takeover is complete and we have a bench full of World Class subs
