The Hip-Hop/Rap Thread

Post by Fester » Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:22 pm

I thought I'd make this thread for anyone who fancied posting some Hip-Hi/Rap/Grime etc. and didn't fancy doing it in the main music thread.

I'll kick it off with a classic.

Really enjoy some early hip hop. Can't say I enjoy too much stuff of late but it's not an area I claim to as well versed in as the likes of others on here are; Cal & Gashead for instance. It's the atmosphere and tension that you get from the old school stuff that gets through to me, and I think recently most hip hop is turning more into an intricate craft than a passionate outburst which, for me, is losing what I love about it.

I like a bit of both, but I can't stand most mainstream modern hip-hip/rap which revolves around how many cars/pieces of jewelery they have. Generalisation I know, but most people will understan what I mean.

The underground in the UK is far, far superior to modern mainstream which is close to be completely horrible.

Possibly my favourite Nas song, on his most underrated album. Lovely use of the Sting sample by Trackmasters, nice smooth flow and enjoyable lyrically. God, he was good back then. Saying that, his recent stuff is very, very impressive. If he's fully focused on Life Is Good (possibly out this year), we could be seeing Nas' best album since God's Son.

Easily my favourite UK rapper, this is amazing. Never the best rhymer, but his content, delivery and ability to convey a message so cleverly is immense. The amount of quotables in it are amazing.

My favourite song ever. One of the greatest lyrical displays in rap history. To rap out an argument, play both voices, use 3-syllable rhymes and still make it that realistic is breathtaking. The vivid imagery makes it special. The haunting chorus is something else as well.

I really wish Akala didn't have that accent. I can appreciate the quality of the content of his songs, but I just can't enjoy listening to his voice.
