If you haven't listened to Rhyme Asylum, then you should check all their stuff out, they're one of the best out there.

I'm quite partial to a bit of Rhyme Asylum, but struggle to get past the accent. It just doesn't fit the music for me. Saw them live earlier this year as openers for JMT and was impressed by their live set.

Quadrapost
Hard hitting song, not the type of subject the vast majority of rappers/writers would dare to take on.

MURS wrote:Animal Style is a song I did for many reasons. The first was to be an advocate for people close to me who are out, and those who have yet to come out. It's also a love song, which is nothing new for me. But with this one I wanted to challenge the listener to ask themselves: Is the love shared by two people of the same gender, really that different than the love I have for my partner of the opposite sex? And finally, I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture. I felt so strongly about these issues and this song that I had to do a video that would command some attention, even if it makes some viewers uncomfortable. Even if it came at the cost of my own comfort.

Re: The Hip-Hop/Rap Thread
So I've got pretty much every major Gang Starr release now, thanks to a pretty great list of recommendations from Cal. Which artist(s) in this vein (it can be from the list you gave me, if Cal reads this) has the next best discography to dive into?
Re: The Hip-Hop/Rap Thread
I've not got the list any more, so can't use that as reference for the next recommendation. I'm not sure if you tried it yet, but Jazzmatazz Vol 1 is good from what I've heard so far (still not got around to a full listen through). A lot more relaxed and jazzy, less lyrical excellence.

Also, on the Gang Starr note, was just finishing up my first listen to DJ Premier & Bumpy Knuckles - The Kolexxxion as I saw this post. It's a good album, distinctively Premier produced, and I was surprised with Bumpy's range of delivery/subject, since I'm used to hearing him as a guest on albums, for example on The Militia (as Freddie Foxx) on Moment of Truth. Worth giving it a shot, he's considerably harsher than Guru, but still not too far away from later Gang Starr, and they may have announced a European tour today, likely to hit Prague... Dates as yet unannounced.

Really enjoyed that album, I'm going to buy it. I'll also keep an eye on the tour dates, if they get to Prague then I'll be sure to be there.

Nas' first album, Illmatic is my favourite album of all time, I don't think there's an average song on there:
A Tribe Called Quest is another great group that noone seems to have mentioned, here are my favourites:

A Tribe Called Quest. Great.
It was through them that I discovered J Dilla. His album Donuts is now one of my all time favourites.
Mostly very short instrumentals, but extremely addictive.

I've always wanted to like ATCQ, but whenever I try I just find them too smooth for me.
