The Ambient Thread

Post by skalpel » Sun Feb 05, 2012 9:55 pm

This thread is for Ambient music. That excludes downtempo electronica, droney shoegaze or any pseudo-ambient stuff. In other words the likes of Boards of Canada are not an ambient outfit and can get the hell out of this haven of 4am spaced out trance-like reflection <wenger>.

Last one is a track of my own.

I like the last one, didn't you say you'd had some music in movies or something? Also, does Mogwai count as ambient?

So I take it posting trip-hop like Bonobo & Blockhead on here is out of the question?

Cheers <ok>. A few TV shows in the US and Canada took some old stuff of mine which I pretty much hate now. But that tends to be the case as soon as I complete something <laugh>.

And nah, I would say Mogwai is post rock and not ambient.

Music by Cavelight and Dial M For Monkey are two of my favourite Ninja Tunes releases but I guess it would go against the strict rules I've put in place here unfortunately <scratch>.

I just love music, and usually the more experimental or weird it is - the more I like it!

I'm definitely like this! I find the less I understand something musically the more it interests me!
A lot of music is made to be certainly more disposable these days, which is why when I genuinely hear something totally new & fresh I do become a man obsessed and start investigating the artists; who they listen to/were inspired by, their locale and try and link the new music back to old music/genres even if they were from a music scene which was limited to their area.

Virgin Records put out a series of compilations in the early 90s but they're by no means a comprehensive look at the genre nor are they entirely great either.

With the best ambient it's usually recommended to enjoy the full selection of pieces as intended by the composer, be that an album or an EP or a suite or whatever.

Brian Eno's 'Ending' is absolutely magnificent - glad someone posted it.

It's amazing! Secret linked me to it ages ago and I've loved it since the first listen.
