I think this has just triggered an Argerich love-in.

I've been listening to her all day <laugh> Never have I felt more out of place than listening to her perform Chopin's Nocturnes in Coventry city centre when it was full of chavs and arseholes!

<laugh> I've never been overly keen on her nocturnes weirdly. I love her D flat Major but the C minor recording is really poor I think. We'll never get a full set out of her either, she's stopped doing solo performances <wah>.

I enjoy them, not to the extent that I enjoy Rubinstein's interpretations, but still. Gutted I'll never see a full set from her though, if only I was 20+ years older <cry>

Yeah Rubey's are the best by a long way. Nobody can touch her Preludes though. That Prokofiev Sonata recording you just posted is also untouchable <awe>.

The fact she can get me to even enjoy something by Prokofiev is an achievement in itself <awe> Same goes for Rachmaninoff! Two composers I find very dull for large parts of their music.

Anyway, I'm off now so we'll have to finish this love in another time. <gent>

I like that you make a quick exit after slamming the Sergeis in my presence <benny>.

Rather than derail the Album Swap thread I'll continue on here. If you can get hold of the Bruno Cocset recording of the cello suites, I'd really say go for it. The guy is mired in obscurity when compared to the likes of Rostropovich or Maisky or Yo Yo Ma etc. but his cello suites blow them out of the water for me, especially the 2nd Suite which I've always loved the most anyway. Brimming with passion, energy and agony aplenty <awe>.

I'll give him a listen if I can find a download/somewhere to purchase it. Yeah, the second suite is amazing, part 4 made me weep the first time I heard it <laugh>

Yeah it's incredible. I find the 3rd and 4th movements inseparable too, they flow beautifully together and the mood contrast makes it all the more moving. The first time I heard Argerich's Rach 3 with headphones on full blast the finale made me well up <awe>.

Agreed, still waiting for my Cello Suites CD to come through so I can share the beauty with the neighbours <whistle> Argerich is just amazing like that though <awe> Her interpretations of Schumann and Schubert are by far some of my favourite pieces to listen to whilst out and about, just exceptional!

I'm presuming you've got this?:

Argerich & Maisky on the Quintet, giving another piece - unsurprisingly - an untouchable performance <roll>. It's the piece that got me into Schumann properly, before that I'd only enjoyed his Piano Concerto.

I do indeed have that, as like you, it too got me into Schumann <diva> The other interpretations I'd heard were fairly underwhelming up to that point.
