Artist Recommendation

Post by Lidl » Wed Feb 15, 2012 6:24 pm

Basically this can be a place to recommend specific artists.

Post, the artist/ group, maybe a small bio or bit of info about them (summary of their style of music), and a couple of recommended songs of theirs.

I'll start:

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady is an American indie rock band (or more accuraterly, bar rock) from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2004. The band consists of Craig Finn (vocals, guitar), Tad Kubler (lead guitar), Galen Polivka (bass), Bobby Drake (drums), and Steve Selvidge (guitar). Noted for their "lyrically dense storytelling," and classic rock influences, the band's narrative-based songs frequently address themes, such as, drug addiction, religion and redemption, and often take place within the city of Minneapolis.

They also used to have a keyboardist called Franz Nicolay who's now gone on to have a solo career.

Dungen

A swedish psych-indie rock band, though primarily one guy called Gustav Ejstes who plays almost all instruments in the studio recordings. After a couple of mediocre outputs early on, they've put out 4 great albums in a row starting with 2004's 'Ta Det Lugnt'. My favourite albums are the one that got me into them, 'Ta Det Lugnt', and '4' because their styles are polar opposite to eachother; the former being lively and rocky while the latter is far more laid back and relaxed; but both albums are psychedelic/drug influenced as hell. Ta Det Lugnt is mushrooms to 4's weed.

Some of the less psychedelic and thus more accessible tracks on Ta Det Lugnt:

And some tracks from 4:

Edit- All videos blocked from being embedded. Well done WMG <applause> <applause>

Click to view them on youtube I suppose <grr>

Whenever i try to watch any of those videos on youtube it signs me out (even if i search for them) so i can't even favourite them! I enjoyed Panda and Fredag especially though. Dungen seem like a great band!

Anything by Lenny Kravitz. Most under valued artist of the past 20 years.

All of Kravitz's albums have received certifications of gold or higher in the U.S., three of which have been declared multi-platinum.

I meant over here to be honest! You never hear anything about him anymore. He should be selling out Stadiums his back catalogue and live performances are that good.

Ah gotcha. Still, I've always figured he was pretty popular in the UK too; he's had 3 Gold albums and 2 Platinum albums in the UK too which means he surely there are far more under valued artists out there.

He was up until about 1997, when his music got very bluesy and wasn't mainstream perhaps. Thats when Darlek music took over that inhabits todays youth :( Its a shame, because since then his band has matured into something really wonderful.

Natty

Judging from others' recommendations, he may not be everyone's cup of tea but I quite like him and he isn't particularly well known.

I saw him when he came over to Jersey for Grassroots a few years ago. He was brilliant!

José González

Wikipedia: Here

Probably not to everyone's taste, but I enjoy what he's released to date. The album that stood out to me was Veneer, which I don't hate a single song on.
