It's been mentioned already by dls but A Prophet/Un Prophete is well worth a watch.

Basically Akira Kurosawa's and Hayao Miyazaki's entire filmographies are worth watching.

Sword of Doom is also an unbelievably good samurai film, but it's also extremely hard to get a hold of in the UK.

I watched Omar Killed Me tonight. It's about a real-life French miscarriage of justice, very interesting (and sad) story which makes an enjoyable and engaging watch. It's available on Netflix (Canadian Netflix - not sure about the others) if this sounds appealing to anyone else <ok>.
