Re: Foreign Cinema
I've just noticed all of us (including me who made the thread) have assumed that films in English don't count Let's say no American or English films, but Australian counts as I think 'Chopper' and 'Kenny' deserve a mention .

Katyn - Polish film about the Russian massacre of Polish officers in WW2. Can't believe I missed it off my first list it is that good.
Re: Foreign Cinema
If Australian counts then Animal Kingdom is brilliant

Re: Foreign Cinema
Great thread, looking forward to trying some of the ones mentioned. I don't have anywhere near as big a knowledge of foreign cinema nor cinema in general as others here, but here's some ones I've not seen mentioned yet that I enjoyed a lot:
Ladri di Biciclette - Italy *One of my favourite films.
Les Quatre Cents Coups - France
À Bout de Souffle - France
Un Chien Andalou - France
Nóż w wodzie - Poland
Александр Невский (Alexander Nevsky) - Soviet Union
Броненосец «Потёмкин» (Battleship Potemkin) - Soviet Union
Nosferatu - Germany
If Australia & England counts (which it doesn't, but the hell with it), I'll just mention Walkabout, directed by Nicholas Roeg. A well shot film about a teenage girl and her kid brother struggling to survive the outback.
I like watching silent films or shorts a lot more, there's a good deal of European directors who made (and are still making) very good short films that are well shot and artistic without becoming too pretentious or up themselves. I'll just take this moment to throw in Jan Švankmajer's name *(salutes flag)*.

Re: Foreign Cinema
Anything counts really, this can be a foreign/independent film thread, but we can be snobby and dismiss people if their English language choices are too mainstream .

I've just borrowed 'Dongmakgol', 'Infernal Affairs, 'Old Boy' and 'The Killer' off my mate at work. Looking forward to my weekend off with some Asian movies!

Don't think any of those have been mentioned I'll come back and add more when I'm not so hungover.
'The Crimson Rivers' wasn't bad. It's a bit like 'Seven' but French. I really like Vincent Cassell though so I'll watch just about anything with him in. Another good French one is 'High Tension', really gruesome almost-horror film.
High Tension, isnt that also known as Switchblade Romance ?
La Haine
Doberman
Brotherhood of the wolf
Night/Day Watch
Host
Incendies
Funny Games
Snowtown
Ghost of the civil dead
Two hands
Once were warriors
