How I Met Your Mother, I've sat through 7 years of my girlfriend watching it and have barely chuckled once. Nothing about it is funny, the characters are all walking cliches and are actually all really unlikable. Don't see it's appeal at all.

A lot of American comedy seems to be that way, set-up and obvious. Notable exceptions include Parks and Recreation. They generally seem to need the joke explained to them.

Community has some less obvious jokes too.

I like HIMYM actually, especially for the occasionally clever stuff they do with multiple/unreliable narratives
