I wrote a post last night and just as I pressed send the site went down, then it happened just again this morning
Non Spoiler pictures in spoiler boxes.
Firstly some animation. Sylvain Chomet's animation style is amazing. Although 'Triplettes de Belleville' is my favourite, the film 'The Illusonist' looks better. It's set in Scotland, mainly 50s Edinburgh and it's gorgeous. The film has a very melancholic tone and the visuals reinforce it.
Also in animation I really enjoyed the comic book Persepolis. Not into comics but this one was about Politics and religion in Iran. The film looked good as well, still in B&W. Not that detailed, quite child like and simplistic, which suits the niaviety of the teenage narrator.
Going back in time, the Dambusters. I'm a fan on miniature special effects and this one is the best. To recreate the bouncing bombs they used models almost identical to the ones Barnes Wallice used for R&D in the war. Of course you can tell it's toys but there is something authentic. That isn't cgi of a bomb bouncing on water but an actual small bomb bouncing on a tank.
What impressed me most about Skyfall was the way it looked. I really hate in films where a scene with low light levels (night etc) means you can't see anything. Skyfall showed one can have darkness and clarity of vision. The opening shot is dark, yet you can see Craig. There is a notable fight scene on a skyscraper where they intentionally use light and dark to obscure the two fighting silhouettes so the viewer does not know who is winning. Clever
Another mode one is Source Code. The Dream world was very 'blue', but not in a screen filter way (i.e. CSI Miami or Matrix) whereas the military was very dark and drab.
Corpse Bride looked pretty good but for stop motion it's all about Aardman. The Wallice and Gromit films look great. I saw an exhibition of the movie sets in Glasgow, it was epic!
