Re: The Monarchy
I honestly can't muster an opinion. They make little difference to our laws, we spend a paltry amount on them compared to education/defence/debt repayments. I'm a pragmatist, I care less about symbolism and more about actual power and the monarchy is predominately the former.
Yes by the letter of our (still fresh) constitution we are all subjects, but what is written and the status quo aren't the same. In the same vein US politics is constitutionally secular and ours religious, but in reality it's the exact opposite

Re: The Monarchy
Oh and I think some monarchy criticism is unfounded. People want royals to be more like the common man, Harry acted like a normal squaddie and got criticism for badly judged fancy dress/strip clubs etc.
As for Charles. He loved a woman but was prevented from marrying here cos she was divorced. So an arranged marriage was made. A poor choice but Diana was no more/less culpable in getting into it. But ppl hate Charles for it. His views of homoeopathy are due for founded criticism imo

Re: The Monarchy
People want the monarchy to act like the bland middle-class common man. That's why the William-generation PR team have twigged on and started painting the image of just that. I await the news that the wonderful new family buy their bottled ironing water from Waitrose.

The monarchy is amazing...would you really want a President Cameron? Not to mention the presidency of every nation that has done away with their royal family has ended up costing more on a yearly basis.
Re: The Monarchy
I think it's utterly bonkers that these guys have power purely on the basis they were born into a family. Utterly bonkers. The amount of inequality in our country today and we still fawn over that lot like they're special.
I also hate the fact our national anthem is about them , it doesn't demonstrate national pride at all.

Kate has gone into labour, so the women in my office excitedly tell me...
I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?

I work with a very posh person (landed gentry type) and when it was announced that Kate was pregnant again he declared "William does mount her well".Bodacious Benny wrote:Kate has gone into labour, so the women in my office excitedly tell me...

Re: The Monarchy
I think The Sun have missed a trick with this whole royal birth thing.
Remember when Beckham had a broken metatarsal and The Sun printed a picture of his foot and we all had to stare at the foot at a given time and wish positive healing thoughts?
How about a picture of a vagina which we all stare at and think "PUSH!" at a given time?
Journalism is dying in this country.
