Best Opening Line to a Song

Post by Colback's Orange Tufts » Tue Jan 15, 2013 8:43 am

What opening lines to a song are a great hook? Something witty or just engaging. Few of my initial thoughts.

Beautiful South - Perfect 10 "She's a perfect 10, but she wears a 12, baby save a little 2 for me"

Bily Bragg - Levi Stubbs Tears "With the money from the accident she bought herself a mobile home, so at least she could get some enjoyment out of being alone"

I also think the Arctic Monkeys do this kinda thing well - Fluorescent Adolescent "You used to get it in your fishnets, now you only get it in your night dress"

I dunno about great hook, witty or engaging; lyrics don't really interest me in those regards. But some of the best considered lyrics written as opening lines I'd say are:

"Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root." - Strange Fruit, by Abel Meeropol (performed by many).

"Lifting the mask from a local clown, feeling down like him." - Parasite, by Nick Drake.

"You look different every time you come from the foam-crested brine." - Sea Song, by Robert Wyatt.

A few quick ones:

"As real as it seems, the American dream ain't nothing but another calculated scheme to get us locked up, shot up and back in chains. To deny us of our future, rob our names."
- Panther Power, by 2Pac

"Perhaps I was addicted to the dark side, somewhere inside my childhood I missed my heart die."
- Until the End of Time, by 2Pac

"I tried to find my way through life, but life did not find me. Pieces of a broken man, enslaved in chains and can't be free."
- Good Enough, by Prozak

"I close my eyes, but it won't go away. Am I a passenger aboard this life or am I just a stowaway?
- Alien, by Prozak

"s***'ll never be the same, I could picture it but never explain. Memories stain every inch of my brain and pump through my veins"
- Miss Those Days, by Celph Titled

I'd completely omitted rap <doh>, what a fool.

And Skalps, maybe my description was too narrow. Just what first lines do you like was what I meant. I got up too early today.

Also, this "Hey you, don't watch that Watch this! This is the heavy heavy monster sound, The nuttiest sound around, So if you've come in off the street and you're beginning to feel the heat, Well listen buster you better start to move your feet, To the rockinest, rock-steady beat, of madness.... One step beyond"

"Don't you mind people grinning in your face
Don't you mind people grinning in your face
There's one thing to bear in mind
A true friend is hard to find
Don't you mind people grinning in your face"

Just that opening bit from Grinnin' In Your Face.

Afroman Crazy rap - cracks me up ever time!

Man, check this out- it was this blind man, right?
He was feelin' his way down the street with this stick, right?
Hey. He walked past this fish market, you know what I'm sayin'?
He stopped, he took a deep breath, he said,
Woooooo, good morning, ladies!!

Here are a few that I quite like:

"If we're the flagship of peace and prosperity we're taking on water and about to f***ing sink!"
Rise Against - State of the Union

"You're probably sick of being tired...you can't find the strength to close your eyes... you can't let go, but you can't change everything, stop laying in this burning bed."
Autopilot Off - Clockworks

"When all you needed was a little motivation... they pointed fingers and yelled 'DEAD GENERATION'"
Anti-Flag - Death of a Nation

"Hello tomorrow, goodbye to yesterday, we've been waiting for this moment and we still don't know what to say; we may never find the answers or know the reason why we both decided we should say goodbye..."
Zebrahead - Hello Tomorrow
History wrought with disease for so long, a nation sleeps tight... the poison carries on!

"f*** the Goo-Goo Dolls, they can suck my balls"

Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal.

Moving and emotional I think you'll agree.
