I usually prefer gigs, but festivals are a good chance to discover some new acts, or see acts you would normally not pay for or that have become expensive. I'm going to Rock am Ring this year (165€ for 3 days of festival) and might be seeing Enter Shikari there, who would cost 50€ for their show at my hometown. <fist>

I paid £15 to see them at a local gig back in 2008. I found the ticket for it when I was cleaning out my wardrobe just the other day <awe>

If it's a band i'm seriously into I definitely prefer to seem that at a dedicated gig.

However

A festival is great, as mentioned above, to see loads of acts you aren't sure about, or don't even know about to begin with, and you get, over the weekend, what? 20-30 chances to see something new? They're great.

Plus, it's a fantastic weekend out with mates, and the chance to meet new people, I've got loads of friends I randomly met at festivals. <ok>

Felt it was appropriate to share this.

I was at Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta over the weekend.

I'm no spring chicken at 31 now, and we chose it because it was

(a) in the city, so stayed in a nice hotel
(b) wasn't super large
(c) conducive to my musical tastes
(d) very affordable VIP

VIP was quality, food and booze incorporated in the price, as well as VIP areas that basically went straight up to one side of the stage as well as seperate toilets, etc.. etc...

Now, call me what you will because ten years ago I was the "that ain't a festival experience you c**t" as well, but that was ten years ago, at the end of the day I'm a middle aged man ffs. <urgh>

Not only was it a more enjoyable experience, but also financially worth it as the overall price difference more than paid for itself in the included booze prices. <cheers>

In case anyone cares, here is who I saw, in order. <diva>

Friday: Black Pistol Fire - The Kooks - Kaiser Chiefs - Pixies - The Strokes - Ride
Saturday: Mariachi el Bronx - Flogging Molly - Interpol - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Frank Turner
Sunday: Nikki Lane - The Sheepdogs - Frank Turner - Spiritualized - Ryan Adams - Ride

It was epic. 8)

As I've gotten older with the years I realize that when you reconnect with old mates you just simply revert back to whatever age you originally met them at. <laugh>

I'm off to Rock am Ring on Friday. These are the bands I'm going for:

Friday:

Yellowcard, Rise Against, Die Toten Hosen (famous German punk band), Skindred

Saturday:

Royal Republic, Interpol, Kraftklub (German), The Prodigy, Zebrahead

Sunday:

Papa Roach, Bastille, Beatsteaks (German), Foo Fighters

P.S.: Enter Shikari are playing from 1:45 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. <grr> I'm not staying there this late.

Rock am Ring was great, I'm definitely going there again next year! :)

I got to see the following bands:

Friday:

- Donots: a German punk band which I don't really like, but they were quite good though
- Yellowcard: good performance, though I didn't really know many of their songs
- Rise Against: rather disappointing, a solid performance but somehow the spark wouldn't ignite with the crowd
- Die Toten Hosen: great as always, my first time seeing them live. Just found out yesterday that Peter Crouch is a fan of them btw <laugh>

Saturday:

- Zebrahead: they were really fun, a straight-forward funny punk band. I want to get to know their music more now!
- Royal Republic: awesome performance, I can highly recommend this band <ok>
- Interpol: boring performance and too "alternative" for the center stage
- Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators: Great show! I know Slash is kind of a rock legend, but I didn't really know many of his songs. Especially enjoyed the Guns'n'Roses songs I knew <ok>
- Kraftklub: my favourite band at the moment, and rightly so! Awesome performance and a great connection with the crowd :)
- The Prodigy: although some people in the audience had definitely consumed certain substances, it was an enjoyable concert. Still some of their songs sound kind of "apocalyptic" and stressful <laugh>

Sunday:

- Papa Roach: awesome gig, they just had a 45 minute slot, so besides two new songs they concentrated on their greatest hits, bringing back teenage memories for me <awe>
- Bastille: not bad, but rather boring, they just got the crowd cheering for their radio hits. In our opinion, they didn't deserve to play on the center stage at a rock festival.
- Beatsteaks: good as always, but without any surprise moment. As we had seen them several times before, this was not enough to be the absolute highlight for us.
- Foo Fighters: an excellent show with all their great hits, but too long with two and a half hours.

I still can't believe all the music festivals this summer were canceled because of the pandemic.
I can't imagine my summer without festivals.

Ah what happened to Andy the German Mag?

I've never been to a festival and never intend to, I prefer gigs where I can go for a decent meal and a few drinks first. Things like Glastonbury now just seem full of middle aged people with their kids. And young people pretending they like watching the likes of Dolly Parton.

Stewarded at Leeds once and VIP area at Download. I can see the appeal, lots of music for your cash. But ppl are disgusting at these things and I don't like camping so not for me. The sound quality is also massively variable.

Also I'm old at heart now, but even in my 20s I wasn't enthused.

I've been on a train where people have got on after spending the weekend at Leeds Festival <puke>

We had decent showers (on the staff camp) but I felt minging on the train home. The shower after was rejuvenating to say the least.

Day festivals for me. Head there after lunch, stay til closing, but sleep in a decent bed.
Getting home is always a s*** show but better than some naked man bursting into your tent at 4am looking for ketamine.

I said I was sorry more than once...

Went to Glastonbury and it poured down with rain to the extent that the area my tent was in flooded and knocked over the portaloos so my tent was stuck in a mix of crap and piss. I spent two days sleeping under a truck and abandoned the tent.

Went to Reading, one of the first to arrive so pitched the tent and headed off into the town centre for a pub crawl. Came back, campsite was full and we were too drunk to remember where our tent was. Spent 4 days sleeping rough and stayed till the end to collect the tent and it had been stolen.

I prefer individual gigs.

When I went to Glastonbury there was a pretty disturbing incident for some of the happy campers.

The main stage faced a moderately steep hill with a hedge barrier running down the right hand side (as you are looking at the stage). As the first evening progressed the thousands of fans kept going to the hedge for a piss rather than go to the toilets. Because it was really warm and the ground was bone dry the piss didn't absorb into the earth, so after several hours of being a constant toilet it just started flowing down hill and there was a river of piss flowing down the hill, round a bit of a bend next to the stage on on into a low lying camping area, where a hundred or so tents were completely swamped in it.

Luckily my tent was on high ground in the field the other side of the hedge so I was able to laugh about it. Cynical bastard that I am!

I've been to the Belgian GP a few times which is in a forest essentially - all you see from the woods is plumes of steams from tens of thousands of men using the woodland to take a piss.
