Your most memorable NUFC defeat?
Does anyone have a Newcastle game(s) they're strangely fond of despite the fact that we lost?
For me it's the 4-3 against Man United on Boxing Day 2012. I had just arrived in America about to start a 6-week trip out there, my connecting flight was delayed for hours so I just sat and watched this in a bar. It was a pretty thrilling game which was gutting to lose in the 90th minute having taking the lead 3 times. Given that I never take our defeats well this one never really bothered me, I suppose it makes a difference when it's end to end and there's a lot of goals involved.

This is like asking the favourite time you broke a bone or the best funeral you went to.

So you'd say Newcastle losing is comparable to those two things?biggeordiedave wrote:This is like asking the favourite time you broke a bone or the best funeral you went to.

Newcastle 3 - 4 Man City in 1968. City won the league, got us in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and we won it. Still our last trophy to this day.

Okay maybe not that level, but maybe "when did you have the most fun having diarrhea?" Your example doesn't help because that defeat was f***ing awful.Juliet Papa Golf wrote:So you'd say Newcastle losing is comparable to those two things?biggeordiedave wrote:This is like asking the favourite time you broke a bone or the best funeral you went to.

The 4-4 aggregate affair against Troyes in 2001.
We sucked playing away and lost yet we came within a few inches off winning the home fixture to go through to the next round.

None. I f***ing hate it when we lose.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

Williamson nearly 10 yards off the man he's supposed to be marking as he scores the winner in the 90th minute
I dunno
Re: Your Favourite NUFC defeat?
This is a strange question. I can't really think of a defeat I've enjoyed as such, Marseille in 2004 was devastating but memorable. This is probably better for Sunderland fans where they've had defeats followed by pitch invasions as they've stayed up on the last day.

This thread looks and feels very RTG now that I think about itALF wrote:This is a strange question. Marseille is a very good shout. I would maybe include the loss to Benfica away in 2013 to my short list of examples only because we should have been 3-1 up at half-time but then we end up gifting them two goals in the second half.

I remember Paul Scholes scoring a hat-trick against us and I always quite liked Paul Scholes so maybe that game? What an odd question.

when we lost to benfica in the europa league on aggregate; despite the loss I felt a strange sense of pride in our team as it was plain to see they gave their all and more than matched a top side but were unlucky to go out.

I've never enjoyed a defeat but I remember Matt me Tissier used to score absolute stunners against us when ever we played Southampton .

Probably the Benfica defeat draw (aggregate defeat). We gave everything, 1-0 up and just needed another goal to progress. Had the two disallowed goals and came close to that second goal. Ultimately ended up conceding on the counter very late on. Probably the best reaction I've ever witnessed from supporters in SJP when we conceded that goal, you could have been forgiven for thinking we had scored.

Re: Your Favourite NUFC defeat?
It's painful in hindsight, but the 4-3 Liverpool loss is one of my first memories of PL football. If I'd already been a Newcastle fan it would have been excruciatingly painful, but instead it led to me developing my fandom for NUFC (I didn't have a favourite club yet).

Re: Your Favourite NUFC defeat?
I was struggling to think of an answer to this one but then I remembered the Arsenal 7-3 at The Emirates a few years back.
We were actually half decent for the first hour or so then capitulated in the end. Either way it was a great game, my first trip to The Emirates and a cracking day out. Great night out afterwards too.

I think this might have been in the same week as the 4-3 to Man Utd..?Aldridge Prior wrote:I was struggling to think of an answer to this one but then I remembered the Arsenal 7-3 at The Emirates a few years back.

Losing to a relegation battling Blackburn twice in one season might be my favorite losses....

Very enjoyable loss today. I especially enjoyed Colback's performance.
