UEFA Nations League
I watched the draw for the UEFA Nations League earlier and I’m still bemused as to what it actually means or how it all works.
At one point I thought it all about the redistribution of EU fishing rights because there were quite a few mentions of minnows and big fish.
As far as I can tell, the general overview of the competition is that national teams were seeded and planted into pots which sounded like some European Gardening Competition. These teams are then plucked at random into groups which somehow will then become a table and at some point in the ensuing proceedings, some teams are promoted and others are relegated and then they play a few more games.
Eventually there is a final which means that a few teams who didn’t even make the final and were likely a bit s*** earn the right to play in the European Championships.

Re: UEFA Nations League
Heard something about it, does this mean that they're keeping the s*** out of the proper qualifying campaigns? I'm sure San Marino enjoy getting battered 9-0 by Germany but I doubt it helps their football development much.

I don't think that this has replaced the traditional qualifying format but it gives two teams a chance to qualify for Euro 2020 and future tournaments if they don't qualify via the traditional route.
EDIT: Or maybe it's four teams...
Christ knows.

Re: UEFA Nations League
As far as I can work out it the winners from each group play the winners of the other groups in their leagues for a spot at the Euros, 1 spot per 'league' so there will be 4. So it only means something for the smaller countries who won't qualify the normal way. Can't say I'm excited about it.

Re: UEFA Nations League
So now England are playing in a tournament in Portugal next summer ? Is this eventually going to replace the Euros ? I am still confused?

Re: UEFA Nations League
Apparently so. Complete waste of time. I like how the BBC were saying "England avenge WC SF defeat", erm no they didn't! I'm sure Croatia preferred playing in a WC final to making it to the final of the Nations League, which from what I can gather is something akin to the Checkatrade Trophy.

Re: UEFA Nations League
Yeah I’m finding it hard to get excited by it , mainly because I don’t have a clue what it’s supposed to be ?
So World Cup every 4 years
Euros every 4 years
European league every 4 years ???

Re: UEFA Nations League
I find it insanely complicated to understand in terms of how it affects Euro qualification (hopefully it'll become clearer late next year but I think it could be a right mess), but as far as the competition goes I'm quite impressed so far. Minnows are playing each other and playing competitive games, and we've just finished top of a group featuring Spain and Croatia and will go into a mini tournament of sorts next June which should be fun.

Re: UEFA Nations League
So have England already qualified for EURO2020 by virtue of being one of the 4 teams to make the 'finals' next summer? If so do they scrap their qualifying matches (as what would be the point)? Or is it only the outright winner who qualifies for EURO2020?

Re: UEFA Nations League
I tried to understand it and I still don't...
I figured one team from each of the 4 divisions would qualify, but this next bit confused the hell out of me. Not a clue. Wait til next year.
"The UEFA EURO 2020 draw will be held after the completion of the UEFA Nations League and allow for the four UEFA Nations League Final Four participants to be drawn into groups of five teams"
