Match day thread - NUFC v Watford

Post by Toondes » Fri Dec 28, 2018 5:29 pm

Watford (a)

The Magpies conclude their 2018 fixture programme by visiting Vicarage Road on Saturday for a non-televised, 3pm kick-off.

All tickets have been sold - allocation tbc.

Although we were successful there in the 2009/10 Championship season, Newcastle are yet to win a top-flight game at Vicarage Road in eight attempts (including four in the Premier League).

NUFC: Ki Sungyueng is unavailable after linking up with the South Korea squad for next month's Asian Cup.

Coral match betting is here.

WFC: Christian Kabasele is doubtful, after the defender collided with the goal frame during Wednesday's 1-2 defeat by Chelsea at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets are yet to draw a home game this season, winning five and losing five. Maximum point returns came against Brighton, Palace, Spurs, Huddersfield and Cardiff while Manchester United, Bournemouth, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all emerged victorious.

Our only previous involvement with Javier Gracia before his Watford side lost 0-1 at SJP in November was when we were beaten 1-3 by his Malaga side in the Schalke pre-season tournament in Germany during 2014.

Stats:

Magpies @ Vicarage Road - all-time:
2017/18 Lost 1-2 Perez
2015/16 Lost 1-2 Lascelles
2015/16 Lost 0-1 (FAC)
2009/10 Won 2-1 Coloccini, Carroll
2006/07 Drew 1-1 Dyer
2006/07 Drew 2-2 (5-4 pens) Sibierski, Parker (LC)
1999/00 Drew 1-1 Dabizas
1992/93 Lost 0-1
1991/92 Drew 2-2 Kelly, Hunt
1990/91 Won 2-1 Anderson, Quinn
1989/90 Drew 0-0
1988/89 Lost 0-1 (FAC)
1988/89 Drew 2-2 Brock, Mirandinha (FAC)
1988/89 Lost 1-2 McDonald (FMC)
1987/88 Drew 1-1 Anderson
1986/87 Lost 0-1
1985/86 Lost 1-4 OG
1984/85 Drew 3-3 Beardsley, Wharton, McDonald
1981/82 Won 3-2 Varadi, Todd 2
1980/81 Drew 0-0
1979/80 Lost 0-2
1978/79 Lost 1-2 Pearson (FLC)
1923/24 Won 1-0 Seymour (FAC)

Referee: Roger East - first Toon appointment this season for the Wilthshire whistler. His last time in charge of us? Watford away last season when we lost 1-2 and fell foul of a few rotten decisions....

Can see Pereyra and Delefaou running rings around us. 2-0 loss.

I remember playing Watford around this time of year a few seasons back in a drab 1-0 loss. Therefore I'm predicting same outcome this time around <cheers>

I'd be pleased with a 0-0.

That'll be the 'soft' 5-2-2-1 we played against Fulham, Ritchie and Yedlin wing back and Atsu floating about doing bugger all. I hope it's a 4-4-1-1 but I doubt it.

Probably... but I kind of wonder if we'd be playing Schar if we were doing 3 at the back? That's why I'm wondering if it's the 4-4-2 cum 4-2-3-1. Dummett and Lascelles are definitely better in a 4 than the 3/5.

I agree entirely, but against Fulham it seemed almost as though he decided after he saw the Fulham lineup. Having Dummett gives him that flexibility to do either, but you're right that Lascelles and Dummett (and Ritchie, and Atsu) clearly aren't suited to it. Rafa and that.

Don't know why i'm bothering to watch this. Is there an organisation that helps fans who can't help watching their team play s*** football even though they know the experience is going to annoy/bore/depress them?

Benitez whinges about his squad but leaves 2 decent players on the bench... he can't remain blameless much longer.

Our fans must stop enabling his excuses - though to a degree they are acceptable.

One of his most annoying traits in my opinion. Frustrated me when he'd do it with Mitro waiting patiently in the wings.

Watford play the ball up and down and side to side and create problems for us in the process. We hoof it up to Rondon to hold and when we can get possession TRY to play down the wings, mostly on the right side resorting to crosses from DeAndre freaking Yedlin ...

Newcastle. Say what you like about Pulis but he has never been this negative.
