F.A cup match thread - NUFC v Blackburn

Post by Toondes » Sat Jan 05, 2019 8:50 am

Blackburn Rovers (h)

Newcastle's annual flirtation with the FA Cup begins on Saturday with the visit of Championship side Blackburn Rovers to Tyneside.

The tie is a 5.30pm kick-off to allow for overseas TV transmission and lower seating areas only are open.

Tickets are on public sale now priced at £10 adults and £5 concessions, rising to £20 adults/ £10 concessions around 24 hours before kick-off.

Rovers took 3,000 tickets but seem to have lofty expectations as to exactly how popular the tie will be:

Tony Mowbray says his side should look forward to this weekend's game at Newcastle United, with more than 50,000 supporters expected to be inside St James' Park.

They're in for a shock....

The tie will also have VAR coverage and the winners will take their place in the Fourth Round draw, staged after BBC TV's live coverage of the Wolves v Liverpool Third Round tie on Monday evening.

The @NUFC Fans’ FoodBank returns on Saturday in the usual location on Strawberry Place from 3.30pm.

NUFC: Yoshinori Muto and Ki Sungyeung are both on international duty at the Asian Cup and unavailable.

Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark are anticipated to feature, but Federico Fernandez and Mo Diame aren't under consideration to play.

Photos of the first team squad training on Thursday included Jamie Sterry and Sean Longstaff but Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar weren't involved.

NUFC to win or draw, score less than 1.5 goals 10/3
Blackburn to win 1-0, Mulgrew to score 90/1

Coral's new punter offer is bet £10 receive £30 in free bets. Terms and conditions apply online here.

BRFC: Blackburn currently sit fifteenth in the second tier, 12 points above a relegation place and nine away from the playoff positions.

Rovers beat Newcastle 1-0 both home and away during the 2016/17 Championship season, with Charlie Mulgrew on target in both games. The former Celtic player is still at Blackburn and has scored eight times this season - two of those coming direct from corner kicks.

Ex-Magpie Adam Armstrong is set to face his former club for the first time. He's scored five times for Blackburn this season in 26 league and cup games (17 starts).

New Years Day saw Rovers end a five game winless run when they overcame West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Ewood Park in the Championship.

We've faced Rovers boss Tony Mowbray only once competitively before in his managerial career; United completing the double over his West Brom side back in the 2008/09 Premier League season.

Stats:

This will be the ninth time that United and Rovers have been paired in this competition, Newcastle winning six so far compared to Blackburn's two.

It's also the first occasion that we've been drawn at home in successive Third Round ties since 2002.

Craig Hope of the mail reckons Woodman, Sterry, Longstaff and Lejeune are all starting. I'm expecting:
Woodman
Sterry Lejeune Clark Manquillo
Hayden Shelvey
Murphy Longstaff Kennedy
Joselu
Which should be good enough to do the job...

Not a bad team. Is Muto still around? If so might as well get some use out of him before he goes off to the Asia Cup.

Yeah he's out there now.

I don’t think (nor want) him to be transfer listed. I could see him going on loan if we got a player or two in (which we won’t). I still want to see him get given a run of games. He deserves that.

That team should have enough. Not like we’ll be fatigued or anything as we don’t really play all that many games and have a week until our next match after today.

It's not the winning that matters. It's the taking part.

Don't really want that either. But the current hierarchy and manager seem to like to bin players if they don't fancy them
