Absolute Record for women's football attendance in Spain
Absolute Record for women's football attendance in Spain
Wednesday's clash between Athletic Club and Atlético de Madrid, corresponding to the semifinals of the Copa de la Reina, has gathered 48,121 spectators at the San Mamés stadium, thus breaking the record of attending a women's football game in Spain.

Unthought of 20 years ago ... is women's football really "arriving" now?!
Thoughts?!

There are a couple of decent female pundits now, although still a case that some aren’t particularly good and are thrown in as a token gesture. That said, they’re no worse than Merson et al.

In Canada our women's national team often has outdrawn our men's national team, same for tv viewership. But that's largely because our women's team has long been more successful than the men's, and their stars being more prominent national celebrities.

Nah. It's s****. All for women getting involved in sports, it's a good thing - but it's just not as good to watch.
The only sport I don't mind seeing women compete in is MMA/UFC. But even then... I wouldn't go out my way to watch it.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

It's one of those things, the game will never be quite as quick and physical for obvious reasons, but that hasn't hurt women's tennis which is arguably technically more interesting to watch. Add to that the 'nurture' cultural side whereby basically every man in the country plays from school age meaning the standard is high due to competition, whereas girls football has only been gradually increasing participation in recent decades. That side of things will improve as more get involved and the money starts to trickle in.
On a personal level, my seven year old daughter has just started playing and I was amazed just to see the number of girls signed up now, where she goes they have a team at each year group. She's just gone to her first Toon games in the two recent home cup ties and seems hooked, so I'm vaguely planning to take her to the Euros when they're here in 2021. Even if the venues are less than glamorous...

Some of the comments in this thread
This is terrific and long may it continue to progress. The more this becomes popular and mainstream, the higher quality the next generation will be.

Same with volleyball (indoor and beach) less emphasis on physicality so more technical play. Women's sport as a whole is becoming more popular, but has a long long way to go.

Debatable.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.
Re: Absolute Record for women's football attendance in Spain
Which bit? The last bit is obvious, participation will clearly improve quality.

Re: Absolute Record for women's football attendance in Spain
going back to OP this one was a special one-off because it was a cup semi-final.
But attendances in general for women's football is coming on in leaps and bouunds in Spain. This season so far for example:
League - At- Madrid v Barcelona - almost 14,000
League - Valencia v Levante - 17,000 +
Cup - Barca have had over 10,000
League - quite a few other games have rolled in at around the 8-9,000 mark...
