Liverpool vs NUFC

Post by ScottishGeordie43 » Fri Sep 13, 2019 10:33 pm

Guess after taking 4/6 points in the last two threads, I'll bring my streak to a probable end this weekend.. <coat>

I've got the same feeling about tomorrow as I did pre Spurs, so here's hoping we pull something out the bag again! Very unlikely as I think Liverpool will have way too much for us, but we can hope.
Team:
Dubravka
Schar Lascelles Dummett
Krafth Hayden Shelvey Ki Willems
Almiron
Joelinton

Shame about Sean being out, and I know Atsu has been decent in recent appearances, I'd try and fill the midfield to try and protect the defence. Anyone know if big Andy is fit? Could do with the big man coming off the bench to bag the winner.. <laugh>

I'm back in Edinburgh watching the match tomorrow, and heading to the Jinglin Geordie, so surely we must get a result <cheers>

From what I've heard Carroll isn't in the squad that travelled. Honestly I'd just do a straight swap of Ki for Longstaff, it's a massive blow but not worth changing the formation back to that woeful one that leaves us more vulnerable. Just throwing bodies in there tends not to help us as the likes of Lascelles are easily confused...

Nope i wouldn't go 3 in the middle we've tried that and it was a s*** show.
My preferred line up would be (playing Schar in the centre where he plays for the Switzerland)

Dubravka
Fernandez Schar Dummett
Krafth Hayden Ki Willems
Almiron Atsu
Joelinton

Newcastle return to Premier League action after the international break when they travel to Liverpool on Saturday.

It's a 12.30pm start at Anfield for live transmission on BT Sport and the away section is sold out.

NUFC: Steve Bruce confirmed in his press conference on Friday morning that Sean Longstaff wouldn't be in the squad after sustaining a slight ankle injury in training.

Only DeAndre Yedlin looks to have a chance of returning to the squad for this game, with the rest of United's crocked contingent - messrs Carroll, Gayle, Ritchie, Lejeune and Saint-Maximin - still unavailable.

Speaking of Ritchie, Bruce confirmed that he was back in training and wasn't "too far away" - a recovery that the Head Coach termed as "quite remarkable", given that previous estimates of his absence with ankle trouble were measured in months, not weeks.

Martin Dubravka, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar and Miguel Almiron will return following international duty, but there was no national service for Christian Atsu, Paul Dummett, Yoshinori Muto, Jetro Willems or Ciaran Clark.

Coral matchday betting is online here:

22/1 Newcastle to win
7/1 the draw
1/7 Liverpool to win
55/1 Newcastle to win 1-0
5/4 both teams to score
29/10 Half time draw, full time Liverpool win

Coral's latest free-to-enter "Correct Four" prediction competition is Saturday's Norwich City versus Manchester City game enter online here.

All four correct predictions wins £50, with three rewarded by a free £2 bet and two correct resulting in a free £1 punt.

LFC: Naby Keita may return from injury as the Reds look for their tenth successive Premier League home victory since a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Anfield in January.

That was their second and final failure to win at home last season, following on from a 0-0 draw with Manchester City the previous October.

Klopp's side last lost at Anfield in the PL in April 2017, beaten 1-2 by Crystal Palace, since when they have won 32 times and drawn the other ten. Gulp.

Travel: For anyone travelling via local train services on Merseyside, there's a closure of the line between Sandhills and Kirkby until Sunday September 15th.

Replacement bus services will be in operation.

Road closures in central Liverpool this weekend will delay traffic arriving from the M62 and A59 and via the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel.

Referee: Andre Marriner (West Midlands).

Marriner's last outing in a game involving Newcastle was the 2-3 home loss to Liverpool in May, favouring the Reds with some questionable decisions - especially the crucial late free-kick that led to Divock Origi's winner.

That was the fifth time we'd had the pleasure of his company that season; the previous four failing to harvest a single goal and just a solitary point: Palace away (drew 0-0), Brighton home (lost 0-1), Manchester United home (lost 0-2) and Spurs away (lost 0-1).

With Longstaff out I'd like to see us try this:

Dubravka
Krath Fernandez Lascelles Dummett Willems
Almiron Schar Hayden Atsu
Joelinton

Shelvey can't be trusted to defend properly and if we are to stay in this game long enough to maybe nick a point or even all 3 then it is absolutely vital the two CMs defend extremely well and protect the back 5. Ki also doesn't suit the ultra defensive CM role so I'd play Schar there. He has all the attributes to play defensive midfield anyway and it allows us to get another defender on the pitch to help deal with the onslaught.

I like this. A lot. I'd even accept Schar and Fernandez the other way round so Schar can still make the mazy runs from the back and Fernandez simply plays the role of a confident on the ball destroyer.

They’ll score within the first 10 mins and our game plan will be out the window.

I know we won at Spurs but this is an entirely different prospect. The Spurs attack is pretty one dimensional and slow, Liverpool’s is anything but and they’ll hit you four or five different ways from different parts of the pitch. We have absolutely no chance!

On the plus side if we're expecting nowt then anything else is a bonus. Also I got 25/1 on a win so I've stuck a fiver on. Worked for that City game last season.

This. Hasn't Schar made a couple of cameo appearances as a defensive mid anyway? I've always thought with his ability to drive forward with the ball, composure, positioning, tackling and eye for a goal he'll be a good DM/CM. Knowing Brucey he'll play three CM's in the middle and play Ammy with Joelinton uptop but hopefully it's just a straight swap of Longstaff for Ki but Schar would be my preferred option too.

Team is just a straight swap. Shelvey for Longstaff. Unsurprising but a little dissapointing.

With Shelvey in midfield we're even more f***ed than we would've been anyway - 4-0 to Liverpool.

Shelvey had better pull out one of his "can be arsed" performances, otherwise we're knackered.

Hopefully the former club factor will help.

Why are there 2 Newcastle shirts hanging off a radiator in the background of the Steve Bruce interview on BT?

Does he do the kits as well?
