Re: Matchday Thread: Newcastle v Sheffield Utd
When I’m in watching with the piped in crowd noise I can’t say I even notice there not being a crowd.
And who misses grown morons in the crowd hurling abuse at players? They’re generally the only tossers you catch on camera.

Agreed. I have missed football a lot and was worried it wouldn't work. This was fine.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 8:06 pmWhen I’m in watching with the piped in crowd noise I can’t say I even notice there not being a crowd.

And I'm fine if everyone treats these like friendlies if we keep winning 3-0.....

In a few interviews players have obviously spoke about lack of crowds taking something away etc. but I wonder how many actually prefer it atm with the decrease in pressure from fans.

I suspect there would be a lot, but for obvious reasons they’re not going to come out and say it.

Re: Matchday Thread: Newcastle v Sheffield Utd
Yesterday it felt like we definitely saw the benefit of not having a crowd, ATM I honestly think SJP is probably the hardest place to play as a home team. It feels like 1 or 2 slight mistakes is all it takes for the fans to turn. So I'd assume the majority of our squad preferred yesterday's conditions.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 9:46 amI suspect there would be a lot, but for obvious reasons they’re not going to come out and say it.

I'd honestly be very surprised at that. Potentially one or two, particularly Joelinton who gets absolutely pilloried, but I'd imagine the rest would prefer it not to feel like a glorified training game.
Would you all be saying the same if we hadn't played basically a half against 10 men and achieved a draw or loss?

Well I hope they’ve got an excuse ready for when we next lose at home (with no fans present).

I suspect fans always overestimate how much impact they have on how players treat a match. We as fans view anything without us as a training match, but for them I imagine there's plenty of competitiveness generated just by being professional athletes. Most get to there by having that drive.Colly wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:34 pmI'd honestly be very surprised at that. I’ve said plenty of times in the past that our fans do us no favours sometimes, it’s not a comment exclusive to yesterdays match. SJP on its day can be the best place to play football, or the worst.Colly wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:34 pmI'd honestly be very surprised at that. Re: Matchday Thread: Newcastle v Sheffield Utd
I wouldn't disagree, a lot of our fans are far too negative whether it be the decade of slating our strikers when they miss the one chance we create each game, the pillorying of Ayoze Perez for his supposedly poor end product despite no support, or the idiot who sits behind me who actually did a disgusted sigh as Ben Arfa was beating the first man on the way through against Bolton. We've watched a lot of horribly negative football so it is difficult to get up for a game, and it's been so long now that a lot of fans will barely remember how to. If given something to cheer for though we do.
I don't think it's influenced yesterdays game though, we started as tight as we ever are, created one chance, then played near 45 minutes against ten men. I don't think the lack of pressure from the crowd made a shred of difference. I'd be interested to see how the game would have gone had they not made a defensive hash of the first goal.

I tend to agree, both on the crowd, but also that it'd be foolish to assume the lack of one had to do with yesterday's result.Colly wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 3:28 pmI wouldn't disagree, a lot of our fans are far too negative whether it be the decade of slating our strikers when they miss the one chance we create each game, the pillorying of Ayoze Perez for his supposedly poor end product despite no support, or the idiot who sits behind me who actually did a disgusted sigh as Ben Arfa was beating the first man on the way through against Bolton. Though I would argue after the first 10-12 minutes, we actually looked pretty decent on the ball, or at least better than I think we have for most of the past couple seasons. Whether that would have led to end product without them going down to 10 men I have no idea.

Hopefully a repeat on Wednesday v Villa to put a nail in their coffin.

I'd support this. It should be like that hotline you can text if someones being abusive, you get one chance and if you slate Joelinton again you get gagged.Colback's Orange Tufts wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 5:12 pmWhat we are actually saying is we need fans but gagged so they can't moanGuest wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 5:10 pmlol 2 funny this. one game without fans and now u sayin we dont need them. honestly, sumtimes you guys make me laugh

Agreed that all fans are the same, though I think home environments are influenced by long-term performance trends. Fans will inevitably be more apathetic or tense after years of mediocre or poor performance, or alternatively, fans might be less patience of a team in poor form after collectively coming to expect better after years of success - but every club is susceptible to it, and Newcastle definitely wouldn't be unique.
