The 15 years old Audi A3 I was driving isn't worth the cost of repair (drive shaft issue out of transfer box to the rear and a few other gremlins) so flogged that an ordered a Golf R <diva>

...like most other people i'll be living in sin on car finance for the next 48 months <laugh>
Cars are f***ing s***. I've had to shell out several hundred this year on my 57 plate Mondeo that cost me £1000 <laugh>. Hopefully that means I'll get another few years out of it providing nothing else goes wrong.

My other car is a 61 plate Laguna <laugh> I bought back in 2017. I crashed that twice which cost me about £1200 and then the electronic handbrake got stuck which cost about another £700. Other problems included snapped coil springs, the front nearside tyre constantly going flat and stuck calipers.

However, I will always continue to buy cheaper second hand cars as I can afford a couple of big expenses a year. My garage also has a 0% interest payment scheme so I just use that. I couldn't afford to chuck £300-£400 a month at a car on finance though.
Yeah, I only paid £2k for the car that died but a basic repair was £400-£500 and in addition it needed two new front tyres and the front suspension ball joint is cracked and in need of repair soon so financially I didn't want to throw money at it. Tax per year was also £325 as it's a 3.2L V6 engine, and insurance was a grand a year on it.

My last car was a Golf R. Fantastic fun but ridiculously thirsty. When I got shot of it the dealership couldn't believe I did 60k in it

Yeah I had an Audi S3 two or three years ago and the MPG was similar but I do low mileage (c. 5,000 a year) so it's not really an issue for me. If I was doing 10,000-15,000 miles a year I'd go nowhere near it <laugh>

My 2008 Nissan Note 1.4 is still going strong.

It's a truly s*** car to drive but cheap as hell to run, maintain and insurance is about £40 a month full cover for me and the missus.

I do less than 2500 miles per year so fine for nipping to the local tip or supermarket.

Never heard of a maxima before now. Thats a long car.

Love hoe the Wikipedia page says "full size car". As opposed to what, a toy car?

I'm the same. I've got a 2004 Ford Fiesta LX, only done 18,000 miles and costs sweet fa to maintain and insure.

Gave up spending money on cars 20 odd years ago, they are just an expense. I treat them like any other appliance. I'm not going to change a toaster or a kettle until it stops working and have zero interest in upgrading just because a new model has come out and I look at cars in the same way.

Full size is basically the same size as a 5 series BMW or a Merc S class.

Yeah, different things for different people.

Most expenses in life are essentially pointless other than somewhere to live and food. Nobody really needs a decent car, nobody needs a sky subscription, nobody needs Netflix, nobody needs to spend money on alcohol, nobody needs designer clothes, nobody needs a holiday abroad, but we all get enjoyment from spending our money on different things.

I want a Dodge Charger Hellcat for my next car.

I have no idea how I'm going to make it happen, but I will make it happen!

6.2L supercharger V8. 707hp. Perfect "family car"

I know a few people in here work in finance so just a quick question...

I've got a FT job and pay tax via PAYE. My friend is making me a director on her company to do a bit of work like checking / signing funding bids, approving payroll etc. and is going to pay me £250 a month.

What do I have to do about declaring that money? Like do I have to complete a tax return or something?

So directors can also be paid via PAYE. If not, you meed to sign up for self assessment i think.

Just to add, if your FT job has steady pay, then adding another PAYE job on top is relatively simple tax wise (just at your marginal tax rate etc).
If you pay is variable, its all at emergency rates and could lead to balancing payments after year end.

Yeah, I'm on a fixed salary on my FT job (no overtime or bonuses or anything like that) so hopefully no problems.
