Match Thread - Brentford v Newcastle (LC QF)
Excitement is reaching fever pitch ahead of the much anticipated league cup quarter final where PL side Newcastle United will attempt to pull off a shock win against championship high-flyers Brentford.
Geordies everywhere are waking up wondering will we have more of the ball than them? Will we have more shots than them? Will we create more chances than them? Can we match their pressing? Can we stop former Newcastle castoff Ivan Toney from scoring?
I think we all know the answers to those questions...

Apparently there is no extra time - straight to penalties after 90 minutes if it's a draw.

For what it’s worth I think we’ll lose but what a chance this is - one leg semis. If we can get through and bag a home draw then you never know. But I do just think they’re riding on the crest of a wave and we are, well, s***.

What's the average size of a Brentford player? Are they big?
Asking for a friend named Steve Bruce.

Bruce, as ever, will be mostly concentrating on keeping the goal difference respectable. I expect this to be a very nervy and defensive affair.
Kindly deeds done for free!

The issue (one of many) we have is that it’s so drilled into the players to stand off and let the opposition have the ball that when a game comes along where we should be trying to dictate play a bit more (e.g. WBA or Brighton at home) that the players literally have no idea what to do. You can see that we’re clueless and there is little to no plan in any aspect of the game.

Steve Bruce masterclass. 3-1 to Brentford.
Re: Match Thread - Brentford v Newcastle (LC QF)
This. We need a fresh manager with fresh ideas. An attacking not necessarily possession based style of football but one that suits our players, pressuring on the front foot and being brave on the ball & always looking to go forward at every opportunity. Doesn't have to be a Bielsa even though that would be fine with me but someone who has a positive entertaining philosophy of how the game should be played.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Tue Dec 22, 2020 11:45 amThe issue (one of many) we have is that it’s so drilled into the players to stand off and let the opposition have the ball that when a game comes along where we should be trying to dictate play a bit more (e.g. WBA or Brighton at home) that the players literally have no idea what to do. List of potential candidates :
Eddie Howe
Marcelino Garcia Toral
Maurizo Sarri
Arsene Wenger
Leonardo Jardim
Ralf Rangnick
The dream would be Pochetino.. but that's near impossible now that the takeover is off. But if it did come of he'll be ideal..

We set out to soak up pressure, parking the bus.
We remember that despite being drilled to death to that, we are still crap at it.
We lose two or three goals to one.
Pundits can’t wait to say we’re deluded for believing we should beat a team from the division below us and Bruce is doing a great job keeping us bottom-mid table of the league.

Jesus, strong team and bench. No youth today. Will make the loss even more painful.

Very strong. If we lose this I'd be disappointed.

I was looking forward to being less disappointed losing this match because of the team we put out and now we've put a strong 11 out that's been taken away from me ffs!
