Match thread - Nufc v Spurs
2020/21:
Spurs (h)
Newcastle return to action when Spurs provide the opposition at St. James' Park on Sunday at 2.05pm, live on Sky Sports.
United will be attempting to prevent the Cockerels from registering their fourth successive victory on Tyneside - something they've never done before.
Their boss Jose Mourinho finally ended his winless PL run at Gallowgate last season, guiding a team to victory at the eighth time of asking. His previous seven league visits had produced three draws and four losses.
NUFC: Isaac Hayden has joined Fabian Schar in the treatment room, with the midfielder not expected to play again this season and the defender still harbouring hopes of returning in time for selection in this summer's European Championships.
Speaking on Friday, Steve Bruce suggested that Allan Saint-Maximin would return against Spurs, but was rather less enthusiastic about the chances of Callum Wilson featuring on Sunday.
The Frenchman limped off during the home draw with Wolves in late February and missed the following draws against West Brom and Villa plus the defeat at Brighton last time out.
Wilson meanwhile hasn't featured since leaving the field against Southampton at SJP in early February - United failing to win any of the six games he's missed.
Martin Dubravka, Ciaran Clark, Jeff Hendrick, Emil Krafth, Jamal Lewis, Ryan Fraser and Elliot Anderson have all been away on international duty.
Dubravka's failure to play in Slovakia's last two games had initially been reported as stomach trouble - however it now appears that he returned to England in time to be present at the birth of his child.
On that basis he's expected to be fit for Sunday's game.
THFC: Heung-Min Son is predicted to be available after recovering from injury, but Ben Davies, Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon are all doubtful.
On the road this season, Spurs have won seven times; at Southampton, Manchester United, Burnley, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, Fulham and Villa.
Three draws came at Chelsea, Palace and Wolves while five defeats were suffered - at Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, West Ham and Arsenal.
Referee: Craig Pawson - a fourth posting this season for the official from South Yorkshire - all at SJP. In charge of the home defeats by Manchester United and Chelsea, Pawson returned for our most recent victory, at home to Southampton.

I can’t watch this one
I don’t think we’ll get hammered but I can see Spurs winning an ugly game 1-0/2-0.

These formations are like experimental art sometimes

Re: Match thread - Nufc v Spurs
I don't get it.. ASM, Willock, Clark & Manquilo on the bench?
Dummet at CB & Ritchie LB? Miggy in the no.10 role with Murphy & Joelinton the wings with Gayle up top?
So I guess our diamond formation has ended? Back to a 4-3-2-1 unless Kraft is part of a back three with Dummet & Lascelles.. Ritchie & Murphy wing backs..
Dubra
Kraft Lascelles Dummet
Murphy Shelvey Longstaff Ritchie
Miggy
Gayle ---- Joelinton
???

Re: Match thread - Nufc v Spurs
I really can't agree, and it's far better than any of our relegation rivals. The problem is that he makes the formations up as we go along and randomly removes and adds players on a whim so we have no coherency whatsoever. Yes the loss of Wilson is a blow, but there should be enough left to at least look capable of something.
Looking at today you've got Longstaff in who's been frozen out for months, it's clearly a back 5 but why Clark has been dropped is beyond me, and I presume Joelinton and Almiron are just going to be plonked behind Gayle with no direction. It's blatantly obvious the tactic today is "try not to concede, then bring on ASM on 70 minutes and hope he can do something by himself", and that's an embarrassment.

Re: Match thread - Nufc v Spurs
Clark clearly dropped due to his comments during the week.
I think the key here is the squad probably is good enough but they do not have the management to get anything close to consistently good out of them. Yeah, we've had some bad injuries but even when we did have Wilson, Saint-Maximin and Almiron all playing together we were s**** more often than not.

You think we have a good squad ? Midfield and attacking options are well below par in my opinion. I agree about Bruce though, he just seems to change lineups and formation every week hoping to strike lucky. It's good enough to finish higher than 17th and turn up to Brighton without a striker hoping for a draw. A half competent manager would have us is 14th at least and safe.Toondes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 12:31 pmYou think we have a good squad ? Clydeside & Tyneside

Murphy yet again showing he has to play more often, only player who can cross from an advanced position.
