Oh definitely, I'm not saying they all do it, it just doesn't surprise me when they do. Established teams have the PL teams/wages/quality already in place so they can be more picky and play hard ball. Teams coming up have to catch up most of the time so I can fully understand why these transfers happen.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 8:58 amI'm not sure I agree entirely that promoted teams splash the cash like that. It's definitely a mixed bag.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Tue Jul 20, 2021 6:23 pmNot to defend the club, but I always expect the newly promoted clubs to outspend the established clubs. End of the day they are doing everything they can to cement a place in the PL and will pour all the PL money into transfers, I think it became clear not many were interested in paying the fee Celtic wanted, we have that luxury really, teams coming up don't have the luxury of being tight arses.
Norwich don't spend much (ever), Sheffield Utd didn't in their first season, I don't recall Leeds going overboard last summer etc. Some definitely do but not always the case.

Seeing very loose reports saying that we "expect" to sign Lemina as early as this week. Four million. Not a terrible spot of business if true. Improves our quality in depth. Mongstaff desperately needs a loan for his development, though.

Yeah I don't mind if that's the case and as you say, Mongstaff 100% needs a season long loan somewhere to play regularly.

Sheffield spent 20M on McBurnie, 22M on Berge, 10 on Mousset , they also paid around 4m on Henderson's loan fee so that is a fair bitBodacious Benny wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 8:58 amI'm not sure I agree entirely that promoted teams splash the cash like that. Leeds spend around 80M to bring in Rodrigo, Raphinha, Koch and Llorente so they did spend also.

Fair on the others but it's still split between teams who spend and team who don't I'd say.

Reminds me, The Athletic did a piece on data analytics changing the transfer market, and happened to speak to an analyst from the club:Colback's Orange Tufts wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 10:03 amhttps://www.standard.co.uk/sport/footba ... 47026.html How could we over compete with Brentford.. who use data to buy on the cheap and don't splash the cash. Relevant extract:
ASM is judged to be worth about 6 points to Newcastle over a season, and even with those Real Analytics' 1m+ simulations have us being relegated.“Data was already important but because scouts couldn’t go to games, we all had to start relying on the numbers.”
Scott’s career in football started in the Newcastle ticket office but his inquiring mind and gift with numbers took him into the football department a few years ago.
When COVID-19 grounded football’s nowhere men, Scott scoured the “data platform market” to see what was out there and he found Real Analytics.
“Data analysis should be the beginning and the end of the process,” Scott explains. “So, we might ask it to find a left-back who can do x, y and z, which will be based on how we play and what we want our left-backs to do. That’s a more useful search than just looking for the top 30 left-backs aged under 30 in France. We want to know who the top five are who can do this, this and this.
“And then, at the end of the process, when you have done the old-fashioned scouting, you look to see what impact they’ll have — it’s almost like doing a virtual transfer, where you can see if the player will actually improve the team or not and by how much. It’s due diligence.”
...
“What I’m really interested in is what I call modern football stats — pressures, counter-press regains — that’s Premier League football,” says Newcastle’s Scott.
“It’s a monster compared to other leagues and you need players who can run all day. If players can’t cope with the physical demands, you will never get more than an hour out of them.”

Best of luck to him, I agree on his day he was one of our best defenders, but due to injuries he could never stake his place. Last year of his contract at 30 years old best to get some money for him. As said I think we're OK at CB injuries permitting outside of Lascelles, Fede, Clark and Schar both Dummett, Krafth and Hayden can fill in if needs be.

Can see why he was sold but when we play 3 at the back he should certainly be in our first XI, no question. Proved his fitness at Alaves last season and played a lot of games. I’d be interested to know how much we got for him, if it was only a few million (likely) then I’d rather have kept him but obvs club are looking at the balance sheet. Good luck to him, he’s too good with the ball to get picked by Bruce anyway.

So embarrassing if true, we won’t even stump up £4m which is probably a signing on fee for most PL clubs.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 7:02 pmLemina signing with Nice apparently. Reports he's arrived there for a medical today

I thought the bigger issue is that he didn't want to play for us - and wanted to return to France?Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 7:51 pmSo embarrassing if true, we won’t even stump up £4m which is probably a signing on fee for most PL clubs.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 7:02 pmLemina signing with Nice apparently. Not sure, but sounds like we were definitely haggling over a tiny fee.Remember Colo wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 12:28 amI thought the bigger issue is that he didn't want to play for us - and wanted to return to France?Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 7:51 pm

I think it was a bit of both really, looks like Nice have paid the full 8M that Southampton were looking for (We were set to pay that too just not all in one go, which is normal for most clubs not just ourselves).Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 7:19 amNot sure, but sounds like we were definitely haggling over a tiny fee.Remember Colo wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 12:28 am
