I find it a bit strange once you get beyond a certain point, but I suppose it's no different to collecting antiques etc, you hang on to something you like and/or hope that some other like minded person will want it in future.

I'm in my 30s and fortunate enough to still fit a lot of 90s shirts (thankfully they made them baggy then, they aren't so much now...) so I've accumulated loads at a slow pace over time, but basically I've only got Newcastle ones to wear to the match plus random ones I wear for 7 a side. God knows what'll happen when my knees go since I'm not a "football shirt round the house" person.

FYI if people are after cheap none dodgy kits I tend to keep an eye on mandmdirect these days. They have a buyer there who gets great deals on kits, so every now and then they add a load (usually last seasons) on the cheap. I got that lovely turquoise Barca 3rd shirt for £20 odd, plus an "authentic" version of our own turquoise 3rd for a similar price. Bought it a size up, fits like a cycling top. Need to shift some weight before wearing it. At the moment they've got some nice South American Umbro tops.

Yeah as you say it’s like anything. What’s the point in collecting ornaments, stamps, postcards, lighters, watches, trainers, football shirts etc etc. There isn’t really one but if the person enjoys it that’s all that matters. It doesn’t really serve a purpose to anyone (unless you really know what you’re looking for and know what might be worth more money down the track) but each to their own.

I used to work with a guy who's quite a big wheel in shirt collecting circles, and I went to his house once shortly after he'd had a divorce. He essentially had a 4 bed house to himself and every wardrobe was full of match worn kits. More money than sense...

Might explain the divorce <laugh>

Is it any more pointless than buying an expensive car though? You don't need it but if you enjoy it and can afford it then fair enough.

Agreed, although I do think there are some people who collect things obsessively with the thrill in the purchase than actually enjoying or using them. And I do think those people need to reassess why they're spending the money in the first place. But maybe I'm just projecting, because I collect vinyl but should I get to a point where I'm not playing the records I need to reconsider why I'm buying them at all.

This is me. I rediscovered my love of vinyl just over two years ago and have purchased about 800 records since then (vast majority albums, only a score or so singles or 12"). I've also been questioning the logic of owning so many records that you can't possibly do justice to listening to them all enough to warrant buying them. But even having concluded that I currently have 11 albums either in the post on the way or pre-ordered. Makes no sense but I probably will just keep on collecting.

As some have said we all have something we spend money on that makes no sense to others ... or even ourselves.

(All of this isn't even taking into account the 3,000 or so CD's i've got, which no longer even get a look in anymore because i'm almost exclusively playing my vinyl).

Wow! I'm quite new to vinyl as my gf brought her record player when she moved in. Just ordered a couple of MUSE albums (Drones and The Resistance) which were only £20 each (just bog standard editions).

I suppose too that if you know what you're buying then it can possibly be an investment? There will be limited editions etc. that will inevitably be worth good money in future if they are kept in good condition but obviously a case of either knowing what you're buying in the first place, or you get lucky. I'd imagine with the amount you have that some will be worth a bit? My mate is slowly selling his Dad's record collection as his Dad died several years ago and they were just sat in the loft. He's up to about £1200 now, but has kept the ones he likes. Most don't go for big money but he's had a 2 or 3 that have sold for around £150 each.

I've done it with a bottle of whisky that I bought for £125 knowing full well it'd be worth around £1000 if I kept it for 5 years, which I did, and sold it.

There are a number of bands I am slowly collecting on vinyl. By coincidence my copy of Showbiz by Muse arrived at the weekend! Haven't gotten around to getting the two you've ordered though, expect I will before long.

Yeah, I have got some that are valuable and I have quite a few special editions which have undoubtedly appreciated since I bought them. There is a music shop specialising in vinyl where I live and just chatting with another customer a couple of months ago he offered me £300 pound for an album I have which is very hard to get hold of. I refused but also advised him to keep looking on line because he could probably get it for half that if he was patient and got lucky. (it was A Small Man, A House and the Whole World Window by the Cardiacs btw). I have also purchased some from this shop purely because I felt they were underpriced and could potentially be sold on at some point, although having listened to them decided to keep them for myself. So that didn't work as an investment.

If you are looking for rarities and stuff that is collectable find yourself a local vinyl store that participates in the annual Record Store Day. This is a day where bands and record companies get together and release special edition albums, 12" or singles that are not otherwise available and can only be purchased from participating small record shops. There is always excess demand for the best releases and if you are lucky enough to get something that is highly sought after it will go up in price straight away. The stuff to be released is advertised well in advance and you basically have to give your wishlist to the shop and hope that they get sent what you want and that you are high enough on their list to get it. In this years I put in for 9 items and managed to get four, so was fairly lucky. (10" issues of the Any Day Now and Newborn EP's by Elbow, The Sisters of Mercy BBC Sessions 1982-1984, and Wild Mood Swings by The Cure). The Cure album is not otherwise available on vinyl even in second hand form because I believe in never had a standard release so is instantly sough after. I also picked up their Bloodflowers album in last years drop, which similarly had I think never before been released on vinyl. Search Record Store Day on t'internet if you want to check it out and find your local store.

One album I have on pre-order is costing me £50 but will undoubtedly be worth more as it is a limited edition by a band with a cult following, Starfish (expanded album edition) by The Church.

So yeah, can be an investment, but I have no intention of selling so I doubt i'll see any profit in my lifetime. Which thereby renders the appreciation argument redundant when I try to justify buying them. To me they will always just be an expense. My nephews will be happy though, assuming they take the time to sell the valuable pieces one at a time rather than getting fleeced by selling the whole collection to a record shop as a job lot.

Oh yeah, your nephews will be very happy!

I've got a friend who works for an independent record store at the weekends, looks like the 2021 Record Store Day has been and gone but plenty of time to do some research ahead of next years! Sounds like you get plenty of enjoyment out of it so it's money well spent.

On a related note, I much prefer shopping at smaller/independent shops when I can, yeah it might cost you a few quid more but it does feel better supporting a local business. I've got a brilliant craft beer shop near me, go there about once a month, stock up, have a chat with the owner and it's great. I can't afford to shop there every week so I do still go to Tesco too, but if you can do it occasionally it makes a difference.

Yeah RSD was split over 2 days this year, in June and July, because of covid. I'm looking forward to next year's already.

I'm the same, much rather support a small local shop than give money to amazon. There are two small stores in the UK that i've made contact with as a result of buying from them through amazon and have come to an arrangement with them that I just buy direct from them instead. So I can spot the album when browsing amazon, see they have a copy for sale and contact them directly and cut out the middle man.

I also enjoy just taking my time browsing and talking s*** with the owner, staff and other customers.

And yeah, I don't begrudge a penny spent, I just question the sense of buying so many records I can't possibly do justice to listening to them. Saying that i'm on my fourth album of the day already and it is still early, so I do get good use out of the collection as a whole. (A Beautiful Thing - Live at the Bataclan by Idles, in case you were wondering! :))

That's some wild pace you're keeping there! I bought my first record (Thursday/Envy split) the first time I backpacked Europe and it managed to survive the trains, buses and flights and haven't really stopped in the decade plus since. I'm only over 300, but all but a handful have been purchased new, many with shipping rates from the US if buying direct from artists/labels, so they typically cost an arm and a leg. Thankfully I've managed to track down my favourite old releases I wanted to own, and at this point can just wait for new releases - which has slowed the pace of purchasing. I take it you have more storage space than me, as it was hard enough moving my collection a few months ago, and I definitely don't have the room in our house to expand it much more.

As for the investment angle; I know i have a lot of first pressings, including limited variants of <200, but have always told myself I shouldn't assume I'll ever sell them, or that they'll be worth anything to others, so if I can't afford them I shouldn't be buying them. But that's also a product of buying mostly post-hardcore, punk, metal, indie and hip-hop albums - which may or may not retain value long-term. And since you've both referenced Muse, I only own Black Holes and Revelations.

Yeah storage is a major issue and is undoubtedly the thing that will cause me to slow down. I've had to do a lot of re-organising with lots of books being re-housed into the attic to make room.

I started again when I was tidying the attic and came across a storage case with a dozen or so albums, some mine from first time round and some that where my mum's (Elvis, the Shadows, Oklahama musical etc,!). One was that Cardiacs album i mentioned earlier and I had an irresistible urge to play it again. But as it had only ever been released on vinyl and wasn't available on cd or digital I had to have a record player to do so. So I bought one of those cheap carry case ones (£20) from amazon. Played it, loved it but quickly realised I needed a better record player and could only justify getting a better one if I bought more albums. Initially I was only going to buy new releases and get my desert island top ten can't live without albums. But that went to s*** almost instantly and i've been ravenously re-buying everything I can find that I like, even though in many cases I already have them on cd.

Many of mine were purchased second hand from my local store though and are real bargains. Policy is £2 for an album unless ticketed otherwise and i've bought hundreds of very good quality albums for £8 or less each, and probably 50 or so at £2 a go. So despite new albums being very expensive compared to cd's and having bought a lot of expensive collectable or rare albums, my average cost per album is probably lower than you would expect. Really need to slow down though it has gone beyond ridiculous in all honesty. I'm an addict!

Was doing a pub quiz the other day and apparently Elvis didn't write any of his own songs, learnt something new that day!

That's what gets you - knowing how limited everything is and the risk that if you don't buy it now you can never buy it in the future (unless paying over the odds in the resale market). Scares me into buying pre-sale all the time now because I remember past releases I dawdled on, they sold out, and never was able to buy. I'm sure it's the same when coming across a classic in a bin.

Yeah I get caught in that trap all the time. Panic buying when rarities (or perceived rarities) become available makes it really hard to pace my purchasing. I try to limit myself to one purchase a week, but if something rare comes to my attention I have to buy it there and then in case I miss out. Because like you i've missed out in the past and in a few instances with albums i'd give my right arm for and now cannot get for love or money.

For me I tend to splash out in fits and starts. I'll buy quite a few things (whatever it may be e.g. clothes, new whisky, things for my flat) in a short burst, then I won't spend anything really for a couple of months or more.

Thankfully my two white whales, Thrice's Beggars, and Manchester Orchestra's Simple Math have been repressed in the past year or two. Not that they're all-time favourites for me or anything, but they were the two I'd held the biggest regret over waiting too long to order following their original release and missed out on.

And now that I've distracted from the original thread topic for a whole page...I am glad I got one of my favourite flashy old Marseille kits from Ebay recently (orange with multiple shades and widths of blue hoops). That's always been my approach, do an occassional search on Ebay for kits from the few clubs I like and something interesting and affordable usually shows up (also got our burgundy and navy hooped kit from a couple seasons back that way).

I'm a bit like that. With my vinyl habit it is a constant weekly drain that I undoubtedly spend too much on. But with everything else I rarely spend anything at all and even then with big gaps in between. For example, I bought 3 cheap t-shirts a few weeks ago (£30 in total), and worked out that that was the first money i'd spent on clothes in about 2 years, when I spent a similar amount on other items.

Part of the reason I can live with (and justify) the cost my vinyl habit is that I literally don't spend money on anything else other than basic bills, necessities, the occasional bottle of spirits and the odd book or blu-ray now and then. But as I don't drink very much these days that doesn't amount to much.
