Reflecting back, he had one amazing season with Blackburn, then a very middling one where he only scored 6. He got his big sale to Man City then, and only scored 4 in his time there. To his credit, he's still playing at his hometown club at age 40.

Yeah I liked Santa Cruz at Blackburn.

Remember Morten Games Pedersen? He was class for a while there too.

There were some good one-year wonders in the league during that period. It's rare now to see a random striker pop up and expectedly score 20+ nowadays.

A couple of seasons he was real class. A brilliant left foot, closest thing Norway has ever been to a Beckham.

Still going strong at his first football club Alta up north, 40 years old.

I meant no disrespect to MGP - nor necessarily meant that he specifically was a one season wonder. In general it just felt like it was easier for a player to seemingly come out of nowhere to score a lot of goals for a season or two. It's rare for players to surprise us and produce on that scale now.

I knew you were kidding and was only half serious with my reply. 1 season wonder just sounds better than 2 season wonder.

Have there ever been many 20+ strikers out of the blue though? Kevin Phillips had that one ridiculous season, but it's usually only players at big sides who manage it. We still have the likes of Pukki two seasons ago who stood out in a poor side, or indeed Wilson at Bournemouth.

Also just want to point out that Gamst Pedersen has allways been a left sided midfielder.

Maybe not always 20+ goals, but I saw a fun list of PL one-season wonders on Squawka the other day - with a few examples including Marcus Stewart, Michael Ricketts, Michu, Andy Johnson and Benni McCarthy. Our Cisse was also named among them.

He had nine or ten one season I believe. The next season he was even better and Alex Ferguson almost bought him.
Never managed to hit that kind of form ever again though.
Fun fact, Souness brought him to Blackburn

I did a quick google to see if I'd remembered the "naturally right footed but his dad made him go lefty" story right (I had), and stumbled across this. Amazing.
