match day thread - NUFC v Brentford

Post by Toondes » Sat Nov 20, 2021 12:52 pm

Brentford (h)

Newcastle return to Premier League action this afternoon, when Brentford provide the opposition at Gallowgate in what will be Eddie Howe's first game in charge -although a positive COVID test means he won't be present.

Joint Assistant Head Coaches Graeme Jones and Jason Tindall will oversee team matters inside the stadium.

It's a 3pm kick-off and a sell-out. The Bees will wear their yellow change kit.

United go looking for a first PL success of the season at the 12th attempt and are also trying to end a five match winless run on home territory.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Howe said:

"The players have responded really well to what we've asked. It has been intense but not every day. We haven't overworked the players but we've tried to implement our philosophy in a steady way.

"We've covered a lot of our basic principles that we want to see the team deliver so it hasn't been too complex. The basic fundamentals of how we play I'd like to think you'll see tomorrow.

"I'm under no illusions about our current situation and what we need to do.

"Tomorrow is a massive day for everybody connected with the football club. The supporters have shown how important it is, a sell-out. I’m sure the atmosphere will be a brilliant thing for me and my players to experience.

"I thank the supporters for everything they’ve done for me to this point, how welcome they’ve made us feel, me and my staff, and I just urge them to really try to help the team get a win tomorrow.

"I've only seen Newcastle in the dark so far. It's been either the hotel room or the training ground. I'm looking forward to tomorrow - it'll be the first time I step into the city in the daylight."

NUFC: Wednesday's training session saw international returnees Jamal Lewis, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar, Jeff Hendrick, Martin Dubravka and Elliot Anderson involved.

Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser also featured but Paul Dummett remains out.

Our betting partners Boyle Sports rate the outcome of this game as follows:

Home win 13/8
The draw 23/10
Away win 13/8

Score draw 10/3
BTTS, NUFC win 4/1
NUFC win to nil 7/2
NUFC win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 11/4
HT 0-0, FT 1-0 NUFC win 12/1

They also have the following offer for new signups: Bet £10 Get £30 + Newcastle to score was 1/4 Now Evens

BFC: Kristoffer Ajer, Mads Sorensen, David Raya, Julian Jeanvier, Mathias Jorgensen, and Joshua Dasilva are all out due to injury but Yoann Wissa and Shandon Baptiste could return.

The Bees remained unbeaten in their opening four games on the road following promotion, thanks to a 0-0 draw at Palace, 1-1 draw at Villa, 2-0 success at Wolves and a 2-1 victory at West Ham. Their last away fixture was a 1-3 loss at Burnley.

Thomas Frank's side travel to Tyneside on the back of four successive PL losses; the most recent of which saw them beaten 1-2 at home by basement side Norwich City.

Ex-Magpie Ivan Toney has netted twice in the Premier League so far this season - both away from home.

Assuming he plays in this game, it will be a first senior outing at SJP since appearing as a late substitute in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United in January 2016.

His route back to Gallowgate has come via loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe again before a permanent transfer to Peterborough United and then Brentford.

Pre-match: We're delighted to have The Dog and Parrot bar on board with us again this season, opposite Times Square on Clayton Street West/Neville Street.

Former Magpie Malcolm Macdonald will be holding a pre-match talk-in from 1pm and returning at 6.30pm. Free entry to both.

Rail: engineering work between Peterborough and Doncaster on Saturday and Sunday means that an amended timetable is in place between London Kings Cross and Newcastle, with extended journey times.

Metro: No scheduled closures.

Matchday buses: The X50 and Q3 park & ride services will both operate details here

Road closures: Temporary road closures around the ground will be in place from an hour before kick-off until 30 minutes after the final whistle. details here

Foodbank: The usual stall and bucket shakers will be on Strawberry Place - please support them with donations of food or cash if you're able to.

This time round, the Foodbank are asking for donations of Advent Calendars (the ones with chocolate in them).

Referee: Robert Jones - Merseyside-based whistler who was last spotted taking charge of our most recent home victory - against Sheffield United last May.

Stats:

Brentford will become the 49th different club that Newcastle have faced in the Premier League and this will be the maiden top-flight meeting of the sides (United were in Division Two when the Bees enjoyed five full seasons in Division One between 1935 and 1947).

Bees in Toon - all-time:

2016/2017 won 3-1 Clark, Gayle 2 (Ch)
2001/2002 won 4-1 Ameobi, Bellamy 3 (LC)
1992/1993 won 5-1 Kelly, Bracewell, Clark 2, Lee (D1)
1954/1955 won 3-2 Curry, Hannah, Mitchell (FA)
1947/1948 won 1-0 Woodburn (D2)
1934/1935 lost 2-5 Gallantree, Kelly (D2)

The most recent meeting of the two sides came last December in the Carabao Cup, when United suffered a demoralising 0-1 loss to the then-Championship side behind closed doors in their new ground.

The team Steve Bruce sent out that night was:

Darlow, Yedlin, Lewis (Carroll 80), Clark, Hayden, S.Longstaff, Shelvey, Fraser (Joelinton 65), Almiron (Gayle 65), Murphy, Wilson.
Subs n/u: Gillespie, Ritchie, Hendrick, Krafth.

Still trying to get my head around this whole "optimistic" thing.

I put a bet on us to win today. Am I doing it right?

I admit to being optimistic about the game but not enough to risk putting a bet on us to win!

I was pretty optimistic until I saw the lineup... This is basically something Bruce would put out. Let's just hope with a new manager they look like they give a f***!

Disagree entirely with this. I could do without Shelvey, but with Schar in the back 3 it's not a flat 5, and that front three should cause bother. All going to come down to whether Shelvey thinks he's playing in our defensive line or not.

I want Fernandez instead of Lascelles as well. And I would not use Joelinton and Shelvey.
It's okay if you disagree, it's a personal thing. I don't want players that make me anxious on the field. Joe doesn't make me anxious though, he just pisses me off at times with his (non)brazilian technique and desicions at times. I would want him to run... and thats about it.

Schar removes the need for Shelvey to drop so deep so hopefully he plays further forward than normal and give us an ok forward pass to keep us on the front foot.

This. It looks like we're going for it and it won't be the shitty BruceBall 451 formation we're used to. 3-4-3 by the looks of it.. hoping we pressure up high & get on the front foot straight away! We need these 3 points & win desperately. Performance is important but even if we can grind out a 1-0/2-1 with a average/mediocre/poor performance that'll do nicely. In future (if we do play this formation) we should play Murphy in Joelinton's position (RW), Manquillo in Murphy's position (RWB), Fernandez over Clark, Dubra over Darlow & Lewis over Ritchie. Would like too see Miggy in there somewhere in a attacking mid role supporting Wilson / ASM or on the right out wide.

Positivity. Brentford to win 2-1. <urgh> <diva>
