Match day - NUFC v Spurs

Post by Toondes » Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:17 am

Football is back <diva>

Spurs (h)

Newcastle begin their second season back in the top flight on Saturday the way they kicked off the first - facing Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs side at Gallowgate in front of the TV cameras.

It's a 12.30pm kick-off and tickets are still on sale, with the Milburn Stand Box Office and Gallowgate End Collection points open from 8am to sell tickets and deal with season ticket holder queries .
Rafa Benitez quotes, Friday:

"Yesterday was one thing, today’s another.

“Today I have to be purely focused on football. Why? Because it will not change anything to say you spent more or less doesn’t change anything. You have to perform and you have to win.

“It’s always difficult to compete in the Premier League. The newly promoted teams have spent a lot of money, the teams who were promoted with us have spent a lot of money, so everybody has spent money. That means it will be very difficult.

“Because we finished tenth everyone can think ‘they were great’. But the difference between 10th and 15th was only a couple of points. In football, you can talk and spend money, but you have to perform on the pitch. You never know, sometimes you spend a lot of money on a player and he is not good enough.

“We did not do everything perfect and we could have done some things in a different way, but I have a lot of confidence in this group of players because they did well and the new players have settled down fine.

“I will be realistic and say (my target is) to stay up.

"We did really well last year with the way we were playing and working. You have to be more ambitious, but it is football and our idea is one game at a time.

"We did that last year and achieved tenth position and did well last year. Hopefully, we will be able to do the same.

"The key for us being better is how good will Muto and Rondon be. They are different to what we had. We have improved a little bit or at least we have brought players who can do a job for us. Maybe we can be better, but the other teams will also be better.

"We have time to do things and I don’t need to explain at every press conference that we have talked.

"We know now is the time to relax a little bit and concentrate on the games. Then we have plenty of time to talk about that.”

"For me, as responsible for the team, my target is to be sure the players are focused on the game.

"So, everything that happened outside the pitch, we have to forget quickly.

"I’m a fighter, I like to fight. So that’s what I will do.

"I want the best for our players. I am calm now.

"Rafa upset? It is not the time to do that.

"Could be better? Yes. The Premier League is so competitive, you have to fight. It will be difficult.

"The main thing for me now is to be sure I bring the best from our players. The way to do that is to focus on football.

"To bring in new players is important, because if a player sees someone running faster, they have to run faster too. The competition is good.

"The reality is that we have a team that did well last year.

"We are ready and I am quite excited and quite happy because I can see the players working hard and training as well as they did last year.

"Now is the time to focus on Tottenham and this very difficult game.

"Every season, every game is different - Jonjo Shelvey is more mature.

"The players know we’re playing against a very good team and the key is to stay focused and have the right mindset from the first moment.”

NUFC: Florian Lejeune has now undergone surgery to repair his torn ACL and will be out of action for the majority of this season.

Six of United's seven close season signings - Martin Dubravka, Kenedy, Ki Sung-yeung, Florian Schar, Yoshinori Muto and Salomon Rondon are available for selection, but Federico Fernandez is sorting out his move to Tyneside after signing on Thursday.

THFC: No less than nine players involved at the World Cup only returned to pre-season training on Monday - meaning that Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Hugo Lloris are all doubtful starters at Gallowgate on Saturday.

Other absentees are Victor Wanyama, Erik Lamela, Juan Foyth and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Referee: Martin Atkinson - who was in charge of United's last competitive game, at home to Chelsea last May. He also refereed Saturday's kickabout at Gallowgate against Augsburg.

Me too, but 2-1 Toon.

Renewed optimism for some reason, probably the amount of alcohol quaffed last night!

Was really positive coming into this game but seeing the same team from last season is so disheartening, im 100% behind Rafa but i can literally see no reason why Joselu should be starting, he will b**** and moan about signing and needing atttacking options then he goes and leaves out the 2 attacking players we do bring in whilst persisting with a proven failure in our attack.

It's like he wants us to lose...
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

I understand playing it safe in defence, but there is no excuse to persist with Joselu

This. The only excuse he could have is Muto and Rondon not being fully match fit but didn't he say everyone was available and fully fit ready to go? It's like Joselu has a blackmail on Rafa, surely he can't keep persisting with one of the most ineffective strikers I've seen at the club? Sure the guy works hard but the quality simple isn't there I'll love him to prove me wrong! I'm sure Spurs backline will be terrified by the mighty Joselu :bandit: <run>

It might look like a shambles up top but I think this is going to be more about keep it tight keep in shape and then last 20 mins give it a good go. Joselu has had the full pre season with the squad and knows the team and system well (still doesn’t excuse him being there nor does it make him a competent striker) but expect to see either Rondon or Muto on around the 70 ish min mark
