Match thread TOON v Rochdale

Post by Toondes » Tue Jan 14, 2020 5:11 pm

Rochdale (h)

Newcastle's FA Cup Third Round replay at home to Rochdale is a 7.45pm kick-off tonight (Tuesday).

A result must be achieved on the night, via extra time and then penalty kicks if required.

Advance ticket sales have now ended and the only method of gaining admission now is buying over the counter from the Milburn Stand Box office. Prices have doubled to £20 for adults and £10 concessions.

To clarify: both online and telephone sales have now ended and there will be no cash turnstiles.

Dale will be backed by around 2,500 fans in Leazes L7.

Team: Speaking to the media on Monday, Steve Bruce was optimistic that Joelinton could be available despite the groin problem he reported at Molineux on Saturday.

Having made his playing comeback from the bench in the first meeting with Rochdale, Matt Ritchie is anticipated to be in the starting lineup at SJP.

And he could be joined by Jamaal Lascelles, sidelined since early November with a knee injury.

However Fabian Schar, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo, DeAndre Yedlin Ki, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto are all unavailable.

A trio of loan players have returned to the club in the shape of Rolando Aarons (Wycombe Wanderers) Kelland Watts (Stevenage) and Liam Gibson (Grimsby Town) but all three are cup tied in this competition.

Elias Sorensen is available after a non-playing substitute role in the FA Cup for Carlisle United earlier this season and fellow U23 squad players Lewis Cass, Tom Allan and Ludwig Francillette could all have a part to play.

Coral matchday betting is online here

Newcastle win in 90 minutes 1/4 (1/9 to qualify)
Draw after 90 minutes 9/2
Rochdale win in 90 minutes 11/1 (6/1 to qualify)
Over 3.5 goals, Newcastle to win, BTTS 10/3

Meanwhile, Paddy Power list specific odds on the method of victory if the tie is a draw at 90 minutes:

Either team to win in extra time 17/2
Either team to win on penalties 10/1
Newcastle to win in extra time 9/1
Rochdale to win in extra time 60/1
Newcastle to win on penalties 17/1
Rochdale to win in penalties 22/1

Find those odds online here

RFC: Ahead of their first-ever competitive visit to Tyneside, Rochdale were at home to League One Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, running out 2-0 winners.

Travel: No scheduled issues

Referee: Graham Scott (Oxfordshire) second outing of the season for this whistler, following on from the 1-1 Premier League home draw with Watford in August.

That wasn't particularly contentious, but last season's
encounters with Scott were less satisfactory: making a questionable call for the late foul on Martin Dubravka that led to Wolves levelling at Molineux and penalising Paul Dummett for minimal contact on Mo Salah in the box at Anfield.

VAR is in operation for the replay although not installed for the first meeting at Spotland. That's handled by Peter Bankes.

Stats:

Victory over The Dale would give Steve Bruce's side a home tie in the Fourth Round against another League One side, Oxford United.

Fourth Round ties are staged during the weekend of January 25th and it's fair to say that we'll never have a better chance of making a first Fifth Round appearance since Mike Ashley bought the club in May 2007.

NUFC FAC KOs since 2006:

2005/06 QF Chelsea (a) lost 0-1
2006/07 3R Birmingham City (h) lost 1-5
2007/08 4 Arsenal (a) lost 0-3
2008/09 3R Hull City (h) lost 0-1
2009/10 4 West Brom (a) lost 2-4
2010/11 3 Stevenage (a) lost 1-3
2011/12 4 Brighton (a) lost 0-1
2012/13 3 Brighton (a) lost 0-1
2013/14 3 Cardiff City (h) lost 1-2
2014/15 3 Leicester City (a) lost 0-1
2015/16 3 Watford (a) lost 0-1
2016/17 4 Oxford United (a) lost 0-3
2017/18 4 Chelsea (a) lost 0-3
2018/19 4 Watford (h) lost 0-2
2019/20 ? ??

The Magpies exited from the same competition at the same stage in 2017, a severely weakened team losing 0-3 to The U's at their Kassam Stadium.

Oxford's last visit to Tyneside was back in May 1993, when Kevin Keegan's newly-crowned Division One champions won a rearranged game 2-1.

Managed by Karl Robinson, they currently sit fourth in the table and made it into the Fourth Round by beating Hayes & Yeading, Walsall and Hartlepool United.

Darlow
Kraft Lascelles Lejune
Ritchie Hayden Longstaff Longstaff Atsu
Miggy Joelinton

Possible 3-5-2 / 3-5-1-1 OR a 4-4-3 with Miggy / Atsu outwide supporting Joelinton.. either way one of the strongest line-ups we could have put out.

Strong enough for a comfortable win tonight surely?

Lascelles being back is a bit of a surprise, hope he hasn't been rushed.

Wasn’t it a bone injury he had? Essentially meaning once it’s recovered, it has actually recovered (arguably stronger than before)

Can’t be accused of not taking the cup seriously with that side.

Struggling for streams - usually use HesGoal or firstrow but neither seem to be working - having to listen to it on the radio through nufc.
